Cambridge Satchel Company Wins Lawsuit Against Copycat Brand

The Cambridge Satchel Company has just won a legal battle against a former manufacturer-turned-copycat brand Zatchels. The unfortunately-named company has also been fined an undisclosed amount of money.

In 2008, Julie Deane started the Cambridge Satchel Company in England to help finance her children’s education. The bags’ popularity increased, and by 2010, Deane had to turn to Leicester Remedials & Sewing for manufacturing. The company incorporated within months, and became Zatchels. Deane was made aware of the copycat Zatchel bags in 2011, and filed an infringement suit in the High Court shortly thereafter. She claimed that Zatchels company was using her designs, patterns, and leathers in its line of bags. Deane just won the suit, and one can certainly see the similarities in the original and copycat bags above.

“I want to raise awareness of the misconduct that has taken place and to assure our customers that we will stick to our principles and continue to create the best products for them. Despite this negative experience, The Cambridge Satchel Company remains committed to manufacturing in the UK.”

Of course, copyright infringement and intellectual property lawsuits are a dime a dozen these days. Deane’s lawyer explains in a release:

“One of the inevitabilities of establishing a successful brand is that there will be others that will look to take shortcuts by copying. This case shows the importance of implementing a brand protection policy including taking steps to register trademarks and designs, but also to actively enforce those rights against infringers, as The Cambridge Satchel Company did with Zatchels.”

We couldn’t agree more.

What about The Leather Satchel Co. Who has been producing this satchels for over 45 years, way way before Cambridge Satchel. So in other words, the copycat sued a super copycat. But in reality Cambridge satchel is a copycat. I have a silver Cambridge 6 month old, it looks hideous! I can’t stand the look of it, all cracked up! I called The leather satchel Co, they said they dont sell metallic satchel because it does not last long and they offer 5year warranty.
