WATCH: Plus-Size Model Candice Huffine On Her Vogue Italia Cover

If you asked us to list off the top of our heads as many names of working straight size models as we know, we’d be sitting here for a really long time. If you asked us to do the same with plus size models, we’d list Crystal Renn, Tara Lynn, Tocarra Jones from America’s Next Top Model, and… that’s it. But thanks to this month’s Vogue Italia and the following video courtesy of Ford Models, we can now add brunette beauty Candice Huffine to that list.

Candice stars alongside Tara Lynn and Robyn Lawley in “Belle Verre”, the cover spread shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Edward Enninful for the July issue of Vogue Italia. And just as we were literally ecstatic to see it, Candice was ecstatic to get the job. Here’s what she told the camera:

I’m just really excited to see where plus is going from here. You know, Crystal [Renn] opened the door for all of us and we’ve been sneaking our way in . And now there’s going to be a place for everyone and everyone wants to see it. So we’re going to show it to you…

It’s definitely a step in the right direction. Just to prove a point — it’s what we’ve been trying to say all this time. We’re in this business just like everyone else. And yes, we’re selling jeans and t-shirts — that’s the job — but if you want to see an amazing editorial, we can do that too. We’re not just catalogue girls. We can really be in the forefront of fashion. And we want to show you that. And people are enjoying seeing it! … So what was the hold up?

More than anything though, this video makes the most awesome case ever for plus-size models. While watching models on camera usually makes us feel fat and inferior (that feeling never gets old), watching Candice made us feel, well, pretty good. As beautiful as Candice is, there’s something relatable about seeing a model with a body that more closely resembles the one we wake up with every morning. And if she can be considered beautiful according to fashion and magazines and all those so-called arbiters of taste, then maybe the rest of us can too.

Only thing I don’t like is that there have been ‘plus’ sized models with name recognition before Crystal Renn. One is Mia Tyler, Liv Tyler’s half-sister.

Also lately ‘plus size’ seems to mean size 12/14 which is NOT plus. Plus sizes begin at 16 and I am tired of regular sized models being called ‘plus’ when they are normal weights for women of their heights.

I am glad that ‘plus sized’ seems to be less of a dirty word in fashion and I hope that it stays that way and the models become genuinely plus sized, not 12/14.

Actually, a lot of clothing stores start plus at 14.  Also, if you’re 5′ tall, then size 12 or even 10 is probably more “plus” looking than any of those models who’re close to a foot taller.
