Is Carine Roitfeld Launching A Harper’s Bazaar Paris?
Carine Roitfeld could have almost any job in the fashion industry now that she’s not at the helm of Vogue Paris anymore. But yesterday’s news that Stefano Pilati would leave Yves Saint Laurent threw some more confusion over Roitfeld’s trajectory into the air.
Hint Mag hinted at the idea that Roitfeld would either launch a Paris edition of Harper’s Bazaar or she’d run off to work at Yves Saint Laurent. But, in this version of the story, she’d be working with Hedi Slimane, who many expect will replace Stefano Pilati after his Fall 2011 collection comes down the runway during Paris Fashion Week. Pilati’s tenure at YSL has long been plagued with rumors of low performance and clothes no one would want to buy, but a recent spike in sales at YSL would seem to dispel that concern. Nevertheless, there are some people in the industry who talk as though Pilati’s contract has already been terminated.
But in the event that our theory is correct (you know, the one that says Pilati isn’t going anywhere), that still leaves the Roitfeld-starting-Harper’s-Bazaar-Paris thing wide open. Roitfeld said in her interview with Style.com‘s Dirk Standen that her career future might very well be in magazines. With Hearst’s recent purchase of Elle‘s international brands, setting up a Bazaar office for Roitfeld next to French Elle‘s Valerie Toranian might not be the worst idea in the world.
But we could be completely and totally wrong here — we can’t say for sure whether or not these rumors are based on discussions that have actually happened or well-timed conjecture and speculation. Either way, it’s fun to dream — and to watch and see what happens.
