Another Canadian Politician Gets Slammed For Showing Cleavage
We’re starting to think Canada has a problem with women having breasts. Just weeks after a Canadian parliament member’s cleavage was photoshopped from existence in her official portrait, a female premier is being slammed for daring to bare her decolletage.
Christy Clark, the premier of British Columbia, stepped into the Victoria Legislature yesterday wearing a navy v-neck dress topped with a khaki blazer. It would be standard fare for any other working professional, but in Clark’s case the ensemble quickly turned into a firestorm of controversy. After noticing that the cut of the dress showed off the top of Clark’s cleavage, conservative political strategist David Schreck tweeted that he thought it was inappropriate for her to be wearing such a revealing dress.

Shreck was attacked on Twitter and in the press for calling Clark to task — and we think he should have been. It’s not as though Clark stepped into the halls of government looking like Dita von Teese on a work night. She might not have been as covered up as many women politicians tend to be, but the amount of cleavage she shows in now way corresponds to the amount of respect or gravitas she has for her office or her work. Still, Shreck stuck to his guns and eventually drew some support. The Calgary Herald wrote that Clark “might want to eschew V-neck tops for a style that won’t risk compromising her professionalism and stature in the eyes of some.”
It’s worth noting that in a poll about the matter on the Herald‘s website, 80 percent of respondents don’t think Clark should have been criticized for wearing a v-neck.
Say what you will about the situation, but to us it seems like a whole lot of boob-shaming. Clark is a woman. She has breasts. And whether or not she shows them has no impact on her ability to govern — or at least it doesn’t when people aren’t rousing unnecessary rabble about her perfectly professional outfits. Clark’s breasts are still in the room when they’re covered up, and no one seems to be outraged about their presence on those occasions.

Schrek acknowledged the double standard between what counts as professional for men and what counts as professional for women on his blog, where he wrote that ” it is true that you rarely hear negative comments about a man’s wardrobe.” But we don’t think that’s because men are generally more professional than women. We think that’s because some men have issues with women being on their professional level.
But that’s just us. Take a look at Clark’s outfit and tell us what you think in the comments.
