WATCH: Cory Booker Now Selling Jewelry Made Of Seized Guns
Newark mayor Cory Booker has been pretty outspoken about his support for stricter gun control laws, and his latest move is to launch a line of bracelets made from actual guns and bullet casings with proceeds going to the city’s Gun Buyback Amnesty program.
Newark started a buyback program in November of 2009, and just two days after the operation started, it failed. The program was out of funds because of the hefty $200 that people were given for their guns, but when Booker met Jessica Mindich of Jewelry For A Cause in 2011, the program got a second chance. The Caliber Collection officially launched in November of last year, and has already generated $20,000 to support the city’s gun buyback program.
The collection is a line of steel and brass bracelets and cuffs created from firearms and bullet casings seized by the Newark Police Department. Each gun or bullet casing’s serial number and the word “Newark” is embedded into the jewelry, and prices range from $150 for a steel cuff to $375 for a brass bangle with a diamond.
Booker went on last night’s Rachel Maddow to promote the bracelets, and said that the city’s buyback program has encouraged people to bring in their own guns and parents to bring in their children’s guns, which is actually quite terrifying. He acknowledges that the buyback program is not a cure-all, but that it shows that everyone has the power to do something in the fight against firearms.
