Will New Crystal Renn Photos Refuel The Weight Debate?
Crystal Renn stars in a spread in the December issue of Harper’s Bazaar and while the model looks stunning, she also looks, well, skinny.
Crystal Renn made her mark on the fashion industry by speaking out on behalf of models of all sizes. As a former “straight-size” model turned “plus-size” model, Renn has never advocated for either size — only health. And yet she’s become most well known as a “plus-size” model. Over the last year, her weight has sparked no shortage of debate — from the time she was photoshopped smaller to the time Terry Richardson shot her in a spread accessorized with spaghetti, raw steak, and slippery octopuses — but the question remains: is any conversation about her weight valid?
The conversation gets murkier when Renn’s history of bulimia, disordered eating, and compulsive exercising comes into play. So often debate about her size gets conflated with concern for her health.
As far as we’re concerned, we love what Renn stands for. Models should be able to be any size — not just a sample size and not the “minimum” required for most plus-size models. And if Renn — whether she’s a size eight, ten, or fourteen — can make that case, we’re on board. She is a beautiful woman and as long as she’s healthy, then we’re happy.
