WATCH: Crystal Renn Sets The Record Straight About Her Weight

Crystal Renn‘s recent weight loss has sparked quite a debate as of late, so the straight-size-turned-plus-size-turned-almost-straight-size model decided to speak out. And we’re glad she did.

In a video on the Ford Models blog, Renn talks about what it’s like to work for Chanel and to pose for Vogue Paris…as well as how people need to chill out about her weight. She explains: “At this point in my life I would have to have another eating disorder to live up to [the plus size] expectation. I had anorexia ultimately because someone else set the standard for me and I wanted to follow it. And if I followed what the public wanted from me or what the media wants from me I would be doing the same thing — I would have a binge eating disorder.”

But then isn’t that the allure and irony of fashion? That in the end nobody ever gets to live up to the ideals that the fashion world sets up for the consumers and society alike (unless of course eternal binge eating is your mantra). Who also can’t live up to the ideal are the models themselves who are used to portray these ideals.

Which raises the bigger question, when is the fashion industry eventually going to own up to the traps that it sets up for itself and the illusions that it absolutely believes against their better judgement are real?
