Teenage Beauty Queen Stripped Of Crown Due To Weight Gain
When Cynthia de la Vega took second place in the Nuestra Belleza Mexico beauty contest last year, she won the chance to represent her country in the upcoming Miss World pageant. But after gaining a few pounds, Mexico has stripped her of her crown.
Nuestra Belleza Mexico’s national director Lupita Jones claims “it was a lack of dedication and discipline” that caused her removal as she “did not comply with the recommendations and goals agreed upon for her preparation”. According to competition rules, the first place winner of the contest goes on to compete in Miss Universe, while the runner-up competes in Miss World. Gabriela Palacio was named de la Vega’s substitute, and she will represent Mexico in November’s Miss World competition. Of course, this is hardly the first time Miss World has been marred by controversy.
Anyway, de la Vega isn’t buying it. She says she gained weight as a result of stress from pageant preparations, and that she was never told about any sort of Nuestra Belleza Mexico-mandated physical requirements: “I feel healthy enough to represent my country, and I think this is an injustice…They took away the crown that I earned. That is mine.”
