Guess How Much This Iconic Marilyn Monroe Dress Sold For

When it comes to Hollywood duds, the white dress Marilyn Monroe wore above the subway grate in The Seven Year Itch ranks among the most iconic. This is why it sold for $4.6 million at Debbie Reynolds‘s auction.

It was thought that the William Travilla-designed pleated frock would sell for around $1 million. The dress was part of Reynolds’s impressive 3500-piece collection that she auctioned off in Los Angeles yesterday. Reynolds collected Hollywood memorabilia for 45 years, and bought the entirety of Monroe’s wardrobe from 20th Century Fox back in 1971. Other items included Judy Garland‘s Wizard of Oz dress and ruby slippers that sold together for $1.75 million, Elizabeth Taylor‘s National Velvet racing clothes ($60,000), and Charlie Chaplin‘s bowler hat ($135,000).

Not surprisingly, the upkeep that her extensive collection required put Reynolds into debt. Surprisingly, no museum would buy the collection as a whole. Can you imagine how amazing it would be to see all of these items together in one place? Now they will be sufficiently scattered across the globe, as international collectors snatched up the pricey pieces.

It is sad if many of these pieces do not end up in museums.
Her family would probably had been upset, but Debbie Reynolds should have had provisions in her will for the most iconic pieces to end up in one museum, preferably in North America.

One can only hope the dress did not wind up in the Bill Clinton collection of dresses.
