Do You Know Why DvF Designed The Wrap Dress?
We love Diane von Furstenberg. She’s glamourous and smart and tough and successful. She makes us feel empowered, you know? And now that we know why she invented the wrap dress, we love her even more.
This nugget of information has been in existence for ages, but it is one we never knew until now, so we assume a lot of you haven’t either. Today’s Daily Telegraph profile of DVF begins a little something like this:
Asked by a French journalist back in the Eighties how she came up with her iconic wrap dress, Diane von Furstenberg replied: “Well, if you’re trying to slip out without waking a sleeping man, zips are a nightmare.” Remind her of this now, and the 64-year-old gives a languid smile. “Haven’t you ever tried to creep out of the room unnoticed the following morning? I’ve done that many times.”
Ahhhh! Diane, you minx! We love this! Wrap dresses aren’t even our thing, and we want to wear one right this very moment because that is the most honest reason for designing a garment we have ever heard of!
The rest of the interview with DVF is, not surprisingly, also totally delightful. We learn that on a recent Christmas card, Michelle Obama wore the same black and white wrap dress Diane herself wore 35 years before. (She’s timeless!) And that working for herself let her make the decisions that she wanted to make. (She’s independent!) And that she thinks Kate Middleton dresses just fine, thankyouverymuch. She does have an interesting take on the royal couple, however:
“I’ve always found weddings sad for some reason, but of course I’ll watch it on television. I think she should go for Alexander McQueen. But you know what? She reminds me more and more of Diana. Everything about her. I think she’s there to avenge Diana’s — that’s clearly what William wants. Giving Kate his mother’s ring was a great gesture, and I think that theirs will be a happy version of his parents’ marriage. But he absolutely chose a woman who was like his mother – that was deliberate.”
Oh, did we mention she also always speaks her mind? Just another reason why we love her.
