PHOTOS: Disney Princess Dresses Get A Historically Accurate Update

Before Kate Middleton became the most fashionable royal around, when little girls dreamed of becoming princesses they thought of Cinderella and Snow White. But one LA-based illustrator researched and found that Disney‘s famous princess frocks just didn’t match up to the time period the princesses lived in. (To be honest, it never crossed our minds that anything Disney matched up with history, or reality for that matter.)

Claire Hummel decided to put her art and design skills to use  toset the record straight, sketching all of our favorite princess’ outfits so that they are historically and culturally accurate. Hummel’s research led her to discover bellyshirts weren’t really all the rage in Aladdin’s ancient Persia and Pocahontas would have never laid eyes on turquoise — the stone her signature necklace is made from.

See some of our favorite princess dresses and their historical revamps, below. We’re hoping costume designers for the rumored Beauty And The Beast reboot starring Emma Watson will take tips from Hummel’s sketch of Belle. Although, Watson’s dress at the New York Harry Potter premiere would fit the role pretty well too.

    Why can’t people leave well enough alone, they have way too much time on their hands.  Disney is fantasy, not history based, the clothes don’t have to be historically correct.

    I think this is really interesting. I actually think they show that the Disney costumes are simplified and stylised versions of the original style. I wouldn’t call them inaccurate, I’d call them cartoon versions. The originals are a bit too detailed and therefore distracting for Disney.

    … They actually look practically the same. The Disney ones are just not as detailed but I mean that’s reasonable considering they were hand-drawn back in the day.
