Douglas Hannant Accuses Jason Wu Of Stealing Dress Design

Is Jason Wu the latest designer caught up in a copying scandal?

Yes, the New York Post would have us believe. According to the Post, some believe Wu copied a dress from Douglas Hannant:

Sources suggested a slim-fitting Wu pre-fall 2012 dress featuring a red-and-black houndstooth print panel is curiously similar to the one Hannant produced in his fall 2011 collection, with black-and-white panels on a black tweed dress.

Hannant is apparently not so pleased, telling the paper: “If I knew that Jason Wu liked my dress so much, I would have sold it to him.” We took a look at the two dresses (as well as other dresses for Wu pre-fall), and while they are vaguely similar, they are certainly not identical. Furthermore, Hannant’s dress isn’t particularly original, and neither is Wu’s. As such, we’re pretty sure there was no foul play involved. Do you agree?

    I can think of at least 3 pieces of apparel designed within the last 3-4 years that are also nearly identical. A sweatshirt, even.

    That is a common happening and who cares because they both have entirely different customers anyway.

    Collectors of the Jason Wu Fashion Royalty dolls by Integrity Toys have long been aware of his propensity for ripping off…err, “paying homage” to established designers in the miniature fashions he designed for his toy mannequins, including such classics depicted at the following link, such as Carolina Herrera, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Gucci and John Galliano, with absolutely NO attribution. So is it any surprise that when he lacks original ideas he’d be borrowing from another designer, when he has such a long track record doing it already?

     you know there really is NOTHING original in fashion if one thinks about it, just so many ways one can make a skirt or blouse or dress, Oh sure MANY MANY variations on fashions to be sure, But lets get real , NOTHING in fashion is ever truly ORIGINAL and I think most designers sometimes creatively borrow from other designers designs, I mean My God as much Money as Jason has made beinga designer I dont think he truly goes out of his way to copy other designers, Sure dont think Michelle Obama would be one of his favorite clients either if he was a copy cat, I SOOOO disagree with the one poster on there who answered basically saying that jason is nothing but a copy cat and to him I would say SHOW ME ONE DESIGNER WHO IS TRULY ORIGINAL!!JUST ONE!!
