DVF Awards Celebrate Four Amazing Women
Diane von Furstenberg, the woman and the brand, has always celebrated women. Her world famous wrap-dress introduced a way for a woman to look sexy, professional, and comfortable all at the same time. Collection after collection, Furstenberg fans thank the Fashion Gods that there is a designer who is so well attuned to a woman’s shape and aesthetic desires.
Earlier last month, Furstenberg announced the creation of her first ever DVF Awards, which, according to insideDVF.com aims to “recognize and support women who are using their vision, resources and commitment to transform lives. These are women who have had the courage to fight, the power to survive and the leadership to inspire.”
Four women were honored this past Saturday evening, at a reception co-hosted with The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown: Katherine Chon, whose work with the Polaris Project helps to combat human trafficking; Sadiqa Basiri Saleem from Oruj Learning Center, an organization the strives to give young girls in Afghanistan and surrounding areas an education; Danielle Saint-Lot who created Femmes en Democratie, which helps give Haitian women economic opportunities through trade fairs and training workshops; and Ingrid Betancourt, the French-Columbian politician that for 6 and a half years was held captive by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in the Columbian jungle.
The event was held in a reception room at the United Nations, decorated in DVF style with “patterned couches…and pink hued candlelight.” “Did you see what we did to the U.N.?” DVF asked WWD. “We turned it into a nightclub!”
What better a way to celebrate these women than a chic evening in a UN reception room-turned-nightclub with one of the most powerful and inspirational designers of our time?
