BREAKING: Actress Elizabeth Taylor Dead At 79
Network news outlets have reported that Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor died in the early hours of Wednesday morning. At press time, Good Morning America, BBC and the Today Show, among others, had all either tweeted or announced on air that Taylor passed away. Taylor was admitted to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Hospital after suffering from congestive heart failure in early February.
The 79-year old actress won two Oscars and has over 70 acting credits to her name, including Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, and voicing Maggie on The Simpsons for one episode. She was as famous for her talent as an actress as she was for her knack for the movie business — in 1960, Taylor became the highest paid actress of all time after negotiating a $1 million contract for Cleopatra.
Taylor famously married eight times to seven men (twice to actor Richard Burton), some of them co-stars in her films. Her lavish lifestyle made her an icon of film and in the fashion and beauty industries. Taylor’s White Diamonds perfume is among the original celebrity fragrances. But for all the luxury of her life, Taylor contributed a great deal to the causes she was most passionate about, including finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. And for her contributions to the arts, Taylor was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2000.
Taylor was, and will continue to be, the subject of various profiles and articles — Kim Kardashian interviewed Taylor for last month’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar. But we think the eldest of Taylor’s four children, Michael Wilding, summarized her legacy best in a family statement released just a short time ago:
“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”
