PHOTOS: Store Censors Elton John’s Us Weekly Cover

UPDATE: Store Speaks On Elton John Cover Controversy

***

Last night a lady went to a grocery store in Mountain Home, Arkansas, where she was privy to one of the more offensive things we’ve heard about in a long time. The people over at Harps Supermarket decided to put a “family shield” (you know, “to protect young Harps shoppers”) over the cover of Us Weekly. But Harps is not trying to protect kids from Snooki or Kim or any other standard tabloid trash. No, they’re trying to “protect” children from a photo of Elton John, his partner David Furnish and their adorable baby Zachary.

This makes us angry. Really, really angry. This “shield” comes from a place of ignorance, intolerance and hate. An image of two loving parents thrilled to finally have a child of their own? This is clearly not something that should be censored. Ever.

Oh that is just plain idiotic, homophobic, etc.

  • Asdofkj

can’t believe all the attention this gets, some people like this website wake up looking for somthing to get pissed off about

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

Considering the Jezebel post highlighting a video that helped show Cosmo’s obsession with sex, I have to wonder if Harp’s also shield’s it’s cover or is it just a homophobic thing.

The underlying Buzzfeed link says that Harps has 60 locations throughout Arkansas and it doesn’t explain whether the policy is chainwide or just applies in this one store, but if that’s the case, Yahoo! Local says there’s a Walmart Supercenter in the same town.

  • Lapislazulistar

So two men adopting a baby is something children need to be “protected from”? God America is so backwards. The person above, would you say the same if it was a black couple that had been censored? It wasn’t so long ago when that was the case.

  • http://www.unicornbooty.com Unicorn Booty

Ridiculous! And yet Tara Reid’s plastic surgery nightmares are allowed to torment us all?

  • Lkj

But what if Us Weekly covered your parents and you, with all your misshapen skulls and whatnot? Wouldn’t *you* feel offended?

  • River Rat

You know, I like Elton. But being gay is an alternative lifestyle that not everyone is comfortable with, including gay people that aren’t “out” yet. Kids shouldn’t be exposed to half the crap on TV or the newstand, because most of it is sex without substance. Sex is a nice reward for responsible human beings. Kids aren’t responsible yet, and should have more encouragement to get their life together to be prepared for sex and the responsibilities that come with it. STD’s, unwanted children, and un-needed emotional overload are things that are tough enough to deal with as an adult. Kids need a chance to get there first, and whatever their sexual preference is at that time is their own choice.

  • the yapper

I agree how could anyone approve of the kardashians and most of the other crap that’s on mag covers and TV and not be ok with elton, partner and baby. Most kids today from a very young age have already be exposed to homosexuality and while it still maybe uncomfortable for many of them….others can relate…homosexuality is as much a part of nature as is heterosexuality…Theirs was a healthy looking cover at least. two people inlove with a baby…what’s so wrong with that…that’s a positive!!! I guess these people should be more concerned about those who truely hurt children rather than those who want to help.

No one is having sex on the cover of this magazine. I personally am not comfortable with fundamental religious lifestyles, and don’t want my kids exposed to that crap without parental explanation, so I guess we should slap a cover over Pat Robertson any time his picture shows up. Remember, Fundamentalism is a choice.

  • SFNative

being gay or straight are both lifestyles or not at all. It is not one but not the other. And furthermore, like being straight, being gay is about love, not just about sex, and those who try to throw shame at gay people as solely about sex and not about love is wrong. Saying we should shield gay people from seeing gay parents with their own children is in effect saying that gay couples shouldn’t adopt children, and that is hateful and evil.

  • Juke

“Boohoo! Everyone doesn’t have the same morals as me! I better try to pass a law to force everyone to think just like me!”

  • Sanity

Isn’t it great that you could if you owned a store?

Now leave those who don’t think just like you alone!

  • Obama

Two perverts should not be allowed to pervert a child.

  • Anonymous

Good for the store! They have an absolute right to censor what comes into their premises….As far as two dysfunctional adults adopting a child, they should rank below that of a straight couple of opposite sexes doing the same.Children that are not raised in traditional families are being put to a disadvantage in every way according to social statistics.Children are not objects. They deserve the best. The last resort for an innocent child should be to be raised by sexually dysfunctional characters like Elton and his “wife.”…

  • Anonymous

CERTAINLY NOT THE SAME AND SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT HAVING THE INTELLECTUAL ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THAT…

  • http://twitter.com/burtfisher Burt Fisher

It is exactly like going through the checkout line that has no candy or other things that are too complicated to discuss at that moment. There are some things that kids’ natural curiosity will manifest at the wrong time. It is more important that the parent make sure that the kid’s foot isn’t run over by a shopping cart, or maybe that the child isn’t abducted by someone who wants to harm the child. Plus the parent has to unload the cart, pay for the food, and many other things. The magazine cover is simply a distraction that doesn’t need to be there. That is why it is in the best interests of the child, and it is the parent’s decision, as it should be. Do you want a law that forces all parents in the store to show that picture to their child? God, I hope not. That would make you part of the problem, not part of the solution!

  • Georgeabosworth

Homosexuality is a sin. Homosexuals are not born that way; rather, they are raised to believe their own behaviour, (whatever it may be) is not within their own control. Children should not be raised to think that homosexuality is ok, and I applaud the grocery chain for what they have done. This is not hate speech. These people are sinning and need to stop, they are misguided and lost. Helping them see their error is not hate. Shielding children from SIN is to be commended.

  • Edwardallen54

They didn’t withhold it from the store display, as they had every right to do. It is on sale for those who want to buy it. They are reflecting what they see as their community’s values.

  • Silverdawn99

I am disgusted at this store. What i see in two wonderful men who in awe of their new child. at least Elton and his partner can afford this child and will most likely be loved and never want for anything.

  • Anonymous

As much as I love a good ole’ hate bandwagon, it’s way too easy for a nefarious shopper to have either moved a copy of this magazine where a racy Cosmo (“SEX: How to make him beg!”) used to be… or vice-versa, to have moved the shield onto this mag. A single pic from a single store can very easily be an incident, and not corporate or store management policy.

I promise I’ll express my forceful disgust and and outrage just as soon as you give me more than just this.

  • Heili

Children that are raised by ignorant fucks are the ones that are disadvantaged. I hate to see what type of trailer trash, gun slinging, tea party inbred little fucks you produce. Better yet, stop fucking your sister and shoot yourself now.

  • poodle

What do you expect its in white trash Ark. Little town would be really surprised who in the town is on the DL. Yes lots of straight married men getting on , bunch of phony red neck ass wipes.
    .

  • Marshall G.

You really need to re-evaluate your argument, because there are no such VALID statistics such as you say, that support your claim. Obviously you’ve never taken a worthwhile science or rhetoric class in your life, or you would know how to evaluate data OBJECTIVELY! Whomever it is that you receive your “statistics” from is obviously a “fundamentalist” (which is a term I completely disagree with, with regard to what it implies), and having said that, your use of terminology for which you are completely and utterly inappropriate for having used (dysfunctional, disadvantage) makes you look ridiculous. Try growing up, going to school, and having a little less hate for your neighbor, as it is not wise to cast stones in a glass house.
I would say you should look up a verse from the book of John in the Bible, but you wouldn’t do it I’m sure…
John 8:7 – So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

  • Anonymous

    Heili,

Sexual perverts should not adopt kids.

And it sounds like you are projecting your incestuous sexual perversions on others too.

It is so ironic that narrow minded bigots like you call people who dont approve of perverts bigots.

  • Melissa

Making baseless claims is not compelling. Perhaps you should cite some of these so called “social statistics.” Bullshit made up from people filled with hate does not have a scientific basis, FYI.

  • http://twitter.com/CestDerrode Derrode L. Rowe

You got’s to be fucking kidding right? You mean it’s ok to have front page covers of celebrities & their immoral acts on plastered all over it like it’s an accomplishment, but it NOT OK to show a HAPPY family with a child who just so happen to be with 2 loving fathers, because you think it’s “dysfunctional”?
I am so tired of this childish comments. You have nothing to back up the statement that they are a dysfunctional family. Especially when they are taking care of that baby like it’s their own.
You want to know what i think is dysfunctional? The HETEROSEXUAL parents, who willingly put up their own child up for adoption, because they don’t want them, or want to “live their life”!

  • Thanks_dumbass

Studies have actually shown that children raised by gay families are not affected in any ways different than “normally” raised children – with the exception of the effects of they may face by bulying at the hands of dumb fucks kids like yours.

  • Cape

I’d like MLA documentation of where it says in the Bible that being Homosexual is wrong. And I’d like those exact words. I somehow expected this from a severely red state such as Arkansas. In order for America to move forward, and become the great nation that it can be, we need leave intolerance and hate in the past. To quote American History X, “Hate is Baggage, life is too short to be pissed off all the time.” Elton John and his partner have every right to adopt a child, which they will love and protect the same as a heterosexual couple adopting one. Why are we so concerned about children seeing homosexuals, and lesbians, and “catching” or becoming homosexuals or lesbians? Life is full of choices. You have a choice as to what you want to be in life, you have a choice as to what you choose to eat and whomever you want to be with in life. Just let people do what they want to do in order to pursue happiness.

  • lady

That’s my town, and they do put shields over other magazines/tabloids. Cosmo, tabloids with ladies in bikinis, even Fitness. I do not think what they did with this one issue was right, though. I’m definitely ashamed of my town right now. Wish I wasn’t.

  • Anonymous

Not only are you a bigot, but you’re tenacious too. Damn.

  • Anonymous

I agree with you about the sex thing, but that’s more of a valid argument to cover up every Cosmo cover in existence and anything with Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton on the cover. Nothing about this cover is remotely sexual. If parents are that uncomfortable, they can say the two daddies are friends.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

So it was “think of the children, gasp!” that made them cover up a happy family photo? This is fucking INSANE. What about protecting the children from bigotry? Is that idea no longer acceptable?

Yes, Harp’s does have shields for other magazines. This one has been on display since Friday. Two nights ago, it wasn’t even covered. As of tonight, it has been removed.

  • Nunyabizness

Kids need time to be kids. It’s extremely sad that society today has such a vile hatred towards the innocence of youth. Hollywood, fashion, music, they are all pushing the same message…’Hurry up and grow up already!’

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…”

  • Horrified

NARROW MINDED?!?! Do you know what that means? I’ll give you a hint – it doesn’t mean thinking that gay couples are OK as well as straight couples. I’ll give you another hint – it has a lot more to do with calling people who have mature, healthy, relationships with other adults “sexual perverts.” In fact, I don’t think anyone said that the bigots (because they do, in fact fit the definition) who censored the magazine were what was beyond reproach, it was the act of censorship. HOWEVER, claiming that people who, theoretically, could be more capable of a healthy relationship than you are (statistically, the chances are pretty good) can’t have children because …wait for it… “(you) don(‘) approve of.”

Attempt to think for a few seconds before you fire off a trolling comment.

  • Leoguy1979

So whats next? Censor a black and white couples baby just because some bigot doesn’t approve of it? This is the most rediculous thing I’ve heard in a long time. There are far more important things going on in the world than to worry about a gay couple adopting a kid. It should not surprise me that there are people out there that still think this way but it does and its very sad. Well obviously a “straight” couple made this little baby and they didn’t want it so a gay couple was more than willing to adopt him and give him a good loving home…what is wrong with that? Elton has had his ups and downs thought out his life and career I will admit that but who hasn’t in their life? I just wish people would just over look the fact that they are gay and realize that they are just a couple who is trying to love and care for a child that a straight couple was more than willing to make but not take care off. Now who is the real “Dysfunctional” once here?

It is not the Book of John, but the Gospel of John. The scripture you are referring to John 8: 7, is not an excuse for everyone to freely sin. You need to get understanding from the complete context, in which Jesus was speaking. But I am sure you may not want to here the Truth of what this Word of God.

  • Eric Creighton

Romans 1:18, 24-28, 32 The WRATH OF GOD is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness…. [24] Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the DEGRADING of their bodies with one another. [25] They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen. [26] Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for UNNATURAL ones. [27] In the same way the MEN ALSO ABANDONED NATURAL RELATIONS WITH WOMEN AND WERE INFLAMED WITH LUST FOR ONE ANOTHER. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their PERVERSION. [28] Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done…. [32] Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Does this answer everyones question, with regard to what God says about Homosexuality? This is verbal and written documentation that you were requesting. However, it is still a choice to obey the Truth.

  • eric crayton

How do you equate the color of a person’s skin, with sexual perversion. Those are two different things.

  • Wilson C

What makes you think that YOU will “hear” the ultimate Truth with all that hatred and intolerance in your heart? Are you just not a human and a sinner like the rest of us? I think that before you place judgment on other people, you should analyze yourself.
I am not going to get on here and claim that I know the “Ultimate Truth” because in this world as humans, we are not priviledged to know it. I can tell you that in this world, I can still distinguish between what’s right and wrong, and there is nothing wrong with two same sex parents raising a child with love.
The Bible has always been interpreted differently by many different people thorughout the ages. The basic message that Marshall G states is not a message to enable everyone to sin but a message to help you realize that we are all sinners and we are not to judge. I think you should really analyze why you find something wrong with two homosexual parents raising a child, besides that it is not “normal”. Please don’t mix God’s Truth with your own personal sentiments towards homosexuals.

  • Marshall G.

It’s easy! They just imitate the way you equate your name with an intelligent life-form like that of a human being… Oh wait… Except theirs is actually analogous, whereas your comparison is far from being so.

  • brad Chavis

The BIBLE says that in the last days, people will call evil good and good evil [ Isaiah 5 ]. The so called hate and intolerance that you have labeled me, is a result of me stating what is God’s Word, not mine. God never calls us to HATE ANYONE. That does not mean He approves of all lifestyles. He loves everyone, but does not accept every lifestyle. In fact, He calls in His Word, homosexuality as an ABOMINATION. It is detestable to Him, but God has provided deliverance for everyone, through His Son Jesus Christ. Whose Shed Blood on the Cross, made it possible for those who accept Him as their Lord and Savior to not be siiners. I am able to analyze myself, and when I have done wrong I can ask God to forgive me, and His Word says that he is faithful to forgive. BUT, you must be under the Blood of Jesus.

We are “Priviledged” to know the Truth, because Jesus is The Truth. The bible calls us Believers to use righteous judgement in this world. That means to use God’s Word, not mine, to judge things. It amazes me that I rarely see people use that verse in the bible, that calls for Righteous judgement. It is because they do not READ the Bible.

The bible cannot be interpreted, it must be revelaed. God said that he would reveal the His Word to those who have made Jesus Christ Lord and Savior of their life only. If you try and use human logic to understand the Word of God, instead of the Holy Spirit, you will get comments like the ones that you have posted above.

    God Bless You

  • brad chavis

Kind of sounds like HATE. Would that make you intolerate or a bigot! I have found that in this country, the only fair game for accussing people of being low-life forms, bigotted, intolerate, hate mongers, are Christians who lovingly express God;s Word. By the way, our country was founded on the BIBLE. The further we have strayed from the Word of God, and accepted what He told us NOT to accept, we have delclined as a country. Yes, I can provide you with as many stats as you can handle. It is a matter of putting two and two together, because it will always equal four.

  • Lee

Americans are so obsessed with what the Bible says. Make your own minds up! Parts of the Bible are deeply racist, sexist, etc having been written by men hundreds of years ago. Since then, I like to think there has been progress in society. America is supposed to be the land of freedom, of choice. Then let people choose how they want to live their own lives, embrace and be proud of such freedoms

  • Erci Crayton

I disagree that America is obsessed with the Bible. This country used to be obsessed with the Bible, when it was established in 1776. That is why we have been more prosperous than any other nation that has ever existed. However, we have gravitated from the principles that allowed us to have things such as Liberty and Freedom. Morality is NOT relative. It is a standard that does not change. The change happens when people “DO What They Want”, instead of being accountable to a standard of morality.

What parts of the Bible are racist or sexist? Give some scriptures to prove these theories. Progressing through time, does not mean that society is going to progress morally. Our country was not founded on Democracy, but on a Republic. A Democracy literally means, “Rule of the people”. That is why ancient Greece fell. When people live without laws to guide them, then that is the beginning of anarchy. Our laws were founded on the Mosiac Laws of the Bible. One of the cycles that forecast the fall of a civilization, is te deline of morality. People refuse self accountability, and follow after their own selfish desires.

  • thisisbullshit

“you’re just like all other people, we respect you and treat you the same, but we don’t want our children seeing you seeing this kind of faggotry” hahahaha oh wow, oh wait you’re being serious…

  • eric crayton

I don’t get it, what are you trying to say?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4VRTQP5F3G47DCKCS4AW7JCXZE Radish Chan

I think you’re concept of freedom is wrong. freedom is choosing what is right and not what you want. the thing is, for some people it’s hard to evaluate what is right and wrong. You also say that the bible is racist and sexist, but you are only against it because you want things you’re own way.
With regards to Elton John’s Issue, I’m not against gay marriage or adoption, but i believe that children should be raised in the best possible way. it’s hard to argue who raise children better, a gay or straight couple since there are both irresponsible parents from both sides out there. I think that the grocery store did nothing wrong. There are some children who are not mentally capable of or mature enough to comprehend the idea of gay marriage. “Homophobic” is not the issue, it’s just that they have their own concept of raising a child like everybody else.

  • http://betterthangod.wordpress.com/ Unindoctrinated

You are correct in saying they have the right to censor it. Everything after that was wrong though. The problem isn’t that they censored it but the fact that they were either so scared of the potential for complaints from religious fundamentalists they felt they had to.

You say they are “dysfunctional” but don’t support that assertion with any facts. I have no way of knowing whether your completely false statement regarding “social statistics” is your lie, or simply your repeating of somebody else’s lie, but if you were to do any research on the subject you would be most upset to learn that statistically children of gay couples suffer less sexual, physical or emotional abuse by a parent than those of “traditional marriage” and in fact the only proven downside to having same-sex parents is that the children will be bullied and harassed, for something that they have no control over, by supposedly righteous Christians. As you say “Children are not objects. They deserve the best.” I imagine there wouldn’t be too many orphans who, if given the option of being adopted by a gay couple, would think living in an institution was “best’.

Calling Sir Elton’s partner his “wife” was rather childish.

  • http://betterthangod.wordpress.com/ Unindoctrinated

The comparison comes from the fact that blatant, public racism was an accepted norm a few decades ago. Now it isn’t and most of us know better and many of us can’t comprehend how it ever existed at all. In a few decades bigots spouting opinions like yours will be about as common and about as acceptable as the Ku Klux Klan is today.
Basically you have a choice; accept that 10% or more of humanity is gay and get over it because there is no way it could negatively impact your life or live the rest of your angry life hating that which you apparently know nothing about.

  • http://betterthangod.wordpress.com/ Unindoctrinated

Excellent parenting ideas you have there. So anything that’s difficult to discuss should be avoided completely. Damn, I hope you don’t breed.
