Men Are Spending A Lot Less On Engagement Rings These Days

Money can’t buy love, but it can buy very pretty diamond-spangled symbolism. And a new study suggests that men are spending less and less on the very pretty diamond-spangled jewelry meant to symbolize a lifelong commitment to love: your engagement ring.

An analysis of statistics from British home insurance firm LV found that men used to spend the equivalent of three month’s income on an engagement ring, because that’s tradition. These days, though, it’s a task getting men to spend more than what they make in three weeks on a ring. And women tend to think their beloveds are spending more than that.

More than half of the women surveyed said they did not how much their engagement ring was worth. But most said they expected their man to spend at least one month’s salary on the ring.

Granted there are still extreme exceptions — and extremes. Kris Humphries spent $2.5 million on the gobstopper diamond he bought for his wife Kim Kardashian, and Prince William paid, well, nothing for the ring with which proposed to Kate Middleton. That ring had belonged to his mother Princess Diana, and has an estimated worth of $500,000.

But if you’re not a royal (in real life or on reality TV), your prospective engagement ring probably isn’t anywhere near that expensive. But if you’re really, truly in love, does it matter?

Does it matter? As long as he wants to marry you and doesn’t fake you out on what the ring is (meaning he buys CZ as opposed to a real diamond) shouldn’t the intent be more meaninful then what the ring costs?
