Dutch Fashion Magazine Editor Quits Because Of Racist Rihanna Piece

Eva Hoeke, editor-in-chief of Dutch fashion magazine Jackie, has resigned after publishing a piece that called Rihanna a racist epithet.

Parlour Magazine has gotten its hands on the press release announcing Hoeke’s resignation, which explains that Hoeke herself also used the term “n****bitch” elsewhere in the issue. Here is what the former editor had to say:

I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term ‘n****bitch’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie. Apart from that I also offered an rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution. I regret that I have taken a stand too quickly regarding an article in Jackie — which moreover had no racial motive at its basis. Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately. After putting my heart and soul into for Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors — although not intented maliciously — are enough reason for leaving.

I should have counted to ten before taking unnuanced stands through social media channels. Through this my credibility has been hurt and that neither fits the role of an editor-in-chief, nor Jackie Magazine. Jackie Magazine will invite Rihanna to share her feelings and thoughts on the article in the next issue.

Wait. Her excuse is that it is an American term that describes a clothing style? This makes little to no sense. Also, still racist! See ya, Eva.

It’s not racism, just ignorance, just the same way as a lot of blacks call themselves N****… Why should other people understand it’s inappropriate if it’s widely used in the urban community???

  • dutch fool

    dumb white cracka-bitch

lol…you and Eva Hoeke are the problem. This is a clear case of racism and yet you still find an excuse to blame blacks.

Not all black people are the same, African americans are very different from black carribeans. Not all African Americans use the N word and blacks outside the USA hardly use the word.

  • shiiii

Believe it or not. It wasn’t meant to be racist. It wasn’t on purpose. Europe just doesn’t know how offensive the word n*****itch is to the rest of the world. This will teach em.

  • Misty Jean Moore

So it’s are fault whites are ignorant?

  • Dude, who stole my pot!?

She wasn’t trying to be racist. She was trying hard to be ghetto fabulous, hip,in the know, and as a nonenglish, non american,Dutch person, she royally screwed the pooch & it figures no one but a select few would see it as what it was,a tragic mistake, and the rest joyfully hop on the racist bandwagon.
Any excuse to post a bunch of ” you see what dem white cracka mofos did to us disenfranchised folk”
We hear every negative Whitey joke known to man but don’t go around preaching about racism.
    Who gives a fck?
She made a Legit mistake and sincerely feels bad, others do it on purpose and feel no remorse.

Born in America, lived in America all my life… there is no dress style called THAT you use THAT to insult someone. Actually I have heard that insult. Then in her ‘rectification’ she said Rihanna was from Jamaica… she is not from Jamaica. If you were an editor would you go out on a limb to use a phrase you’re not familiar with? Really.

Dumbass, who told you that Rihanna is ghetto fabulous?

    ????
From Europe (UK) and I clearly know the meaning of the N word.

you know what? this woman is a journalist and i’m sure that she could have found some other way to express her thoughts about rihanna’s style of dress. ‘trying to be hip’ doesn’t really cut it. journalistic standards should have applied.

  • http://twitter.com/kvs_pr Karen Varga-Sinka

    Yeah, because that was appropriate.

  • coffeenmorphine

No one thinks this woman is horrible racist, but her excuses are ridiculous. How can she say that the term comes from America and that we use it to describe a style? How does she find the words nigger or bitch harmless qualifiers? I suspect that she used that term because people around her use that term and all involved are plain ignorant. She’s just displaying her ignorance more loudly. Furthermore she thinks that Rihanna is Jamaican. I find it appalling that she considers herself a journalist and doesn’t do any sort of fact checking.

  • coffeenmorphine

In short: Because unless they are raging idiots, or 5 year old children, people can look it up in a dictionary on the internet. Especially before using it to publicly describe someone with whom they are not friends.

She is making a statement about the journalistic integrity of her publication and the people with whom she surrounds herself. Now unless she calls all women bitches and other slurs to the appropriate groups, this excuse is embarrassing.

Most of the time racist people are the ugliest people.

  • Don_co_leon

she read over that article a dozen times and even I bet a bazillion others read it too and no one saw nothing wrong.. if she honestly meant no harm she must be subconsciously racist then… there are several other adjectives she could’ve used .. and this is the first i’ve heard N***B phrase .. wat the fuck is a N***B***???

  • LL

If she doesn’t know the difference between proper use of me and I, she shouldn’t be an EIC in the first place …

  • Ladie E.

First  of all calling anyone a n**** B**** is offensive and rude no matter who it is geared towards. The black community needs to stop using this word as a word of endearment and realize that the root cause of this word was to offend and to oppress deeply. It no wonder that the black race/community seem to always be the one down out and underin certain ways its because of this racist SLAVE word!

  • Jordan

The word shouldn’t be used PERIOD!  Black people should not use it, and White people should not used it.  There is a history behind the word, and the creation of it WE ALL know how it started.  You people should be ashamed of yourselves, and most of you’ll walk around so-called educated and intelligent.  No respect for yourselves or others.  White people wouldn’t want Black people walking around referring to them as ‘tailor park trash, honkeys, nor pecker wood’…I can go on with the names.  Black people stop trying to justify why you call each other the ‘N” word. Once again, the word is NOT OKAY!
