When Fine Art Meets Fashion: 5 Collabs We Love

The distinction between a designer and an artist is by no means a large gap. Though the end product may be different, a few common threads remain: creativity, visual brilliance, and like it or not, sale-cost.

And for a lot of people, fashion is art. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has an entire department dedicated to fashion — the Costume Institute — and a yearly party that brings the industry’s biggest players together in a veritable overload of sartorial stimulation.

All of which is why we see countless examples of high art being used as inspiration for collections and even in specific articles of clothing.

Here are five of our favorite designer-artist collaborations. What are some of yours?

Diane Von Furstenberg‘s Warhol Pieces

Patricia Field‘s Keith Haring Dress

Louis Vuitton’s Murakami Collection

Sarah Schofield’s Mondrian Bathing Suits

Reebok’s Basquiat Sneakers

One of my favorite art-in-fashion/fashion-in-art collabs has to be Lisa Paik’s “Museum Collection.” It is comprised of eight different cocktail rings, each inspired by a work of art such as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and Georgia O’Keefe’s “Pink Tulip.” The Versailles ring from Paik’s collection was recently featured on “Gossip Girl.”
