WATCH: Contestant Slams Judge Jessica Simpson On Fashion Star
Note to future reality show contestants: insulting a judge is never a good idea. An even worse idea? Insulting a judge because she’s female and doesn’t “understand what’s going on what right now” in menswear.
Jessica Simpson may not be the paragon of fashion “design”, per se, but she does run a billion-dollar empire. More importantly, NBC’s Fashion Star has, from the beginning, pitched itself as a show about sellable fashion, not artistic design. Which is why this exchange between Australian contestant Nicholas and judge Jessica Simpson is so terrible.
In this preview, Nicholas presents his menswear line to judges Simpson, John Varvatos, and Nichole Richie. Varvatos tells Nicholas his jacket is uninspired, which is apparently fine. But when Simpson tells Nicholas that his use of zippers is passe, he fires back.
“I think it’s a very fashion-forward piece. If you understood what’s going on right now, you’d probably understand that that’s what’s going on right now in men’s fashion.”
And it doesn’t end there. When Richie offers her equally not-so-positive thoughts, Nicholas argues that he shouldn’t have to take criticism from women on his menswear design. And while we wish we could say it ended there, that wouldn’t be good TV! Instead, watch the below clip to see how Simpson and her sassy southern roots get the last word.
