How I Survived Fashion Week: 6 Things That Got Me Through
by Julia Rubin | 6:12 pm, February 17th, 2012
New York Fashion Week is, above all else, exhausting. There are shows and parties and afterparties and after-afterparties on top of, you know, work . I spent much of the week (though let’s be real — it’s more like a 10-day affair) shuttling between Lincoln Center , Milk Studios , clubs, hotels, my apartment, and the office.
I credit my survival to the following six items:

1. Dolce & Gabbana Wild Green Nail Polish
Dolce & Gabbana sent over its spring nail polish collection earlier this month, and I decided to test out Wild Green for my Fashion Week manicure. Not only did it last an insane 11 days, the gorgeous deep emerald color got me more compliments than anything else. It even made nail queen Essie Weingarten swoon !
2. Yves Saint Laurent Red Chain Bag
I bought this bag during my second summer interning at Yves Saint Laurent , and was wearing it when I got my picture taken by Bill Cunningham . It's a bit of a good luck charm, but it's also super practical. It's small and goes across my body which means it doesn't hurt my back, but it also holds everything I carry with me to cover events — phone, wallet, keys, voice recorder, bandaids, lipstick.
3. Clarisonic Mia
I got a Clarisonic after Abrams Media superstar Sarah left me with no other choice . Fashion Week involves too little sleep, too much alcohol, and all the wrong foods. It's pretty much skin suicide. Much to my delight, my little face brush kept me fresh and blemish-free all week. You really need to buy one. Like, now.
4. Asos Navy Patent Brogues
How can anyone cover Fashion Week in heels? IT MAKES NO SENSE. I'm a flat shoe girl through and through, and these babies are comfortable and cute. I even ran down 14th Street in them when I realized I had written down the wrong time for the Prabal Gurung show and subsequently had a total meltdown. (I also have them in leopard .)
5. Plastic Dinosaur Rings
To counteract the insane amount of gold jewelry I wear, I like to top off my look with silly plastic rings. My favorite are 29-cent dinosaur rings that I buy from a party supply website. They're a great conversation starter, which is important since Fashion Week involves a whole lot of awkward conversation starting. (Bonus: the Alexa Chung -approved jewelry got me photographed .)
6. Vintage Fur Coat
My aunt gifted me with a vintage mink coat that I wear almost every day. (Though mine is a dark brown, unlike Kate 's.) Thanks to a fairly precipitation-free NYFW, it was the perfect thing to keep me warm (though not too warm — the joys of fur!). It also kept me fancy enough to appear not too terribly out of place among the actually fancy who had not spent the past 45 minutes in a stalled subway car.
