French Elle Claims Black People Only Dress Well Because Of The Obamas

Just a month after a Dutch fashion magazine’s editor-in-chief quit after using an uncouth racial slur to describe Rihanna‘s style, a writer for French Elle has caused controversy with a blog post positing that for Black people, dressing well is a brand new concept.

In a recent blog post entitled Black Fashion Power, Nathalie Dolivo suggests that the only reason Black people have stopped wearing unflattering street wear is because now there’s a cogent example for them (or in this blogger’s case, us) to do otherwise. Dolivo, who as far as we can tell is white as snow, says Barack and Michelle Obama‘s presence in the White House makes looking chic possible (or at least plausible) for a group of people who previously had no real reason to get dressed up. She misinterprets Jon Caramanica‘s insightful article on Black style in The New York Times last year, saying that dressing up and dressing well is a way to restore dignity to the Black community. Because, you know, Black people didn’t have any of that before.

Dolivo really goes the extra mile, though, when she says that today, the “black-geosie” have “integrated all the white codes” of dressing, filtering them through their Blackness and adding their own Black interpretations and accessories. Like puka shells. Dolivo writes:

In this America led for the first time a black president, the chic has become a plausible option for a community so far pegged to its codes [of] streetwear … But if in 2012 the “black-geoisie” has integrated all the white codes, it does not [do so] literally. [There] is always a classic twist, with a bourgeois ethnic reference (a batik-printed turban/robe, a shell necklace, a ‘créole de rappeur’) that recalls the roots.

And while you don’t have to look very far to find a stylish Black woman in a turban (June Ambrose, anybody?) or a line of clothes that use ethnic prints (we refer here to designer Doro Olowu and others like him), Dolivo is absolutely wrong to generalize the way Black people dress as a new phenomenon predicated on an interpretation of the way white people dress. Black people wear clothes, too, and have been doing so for as long as anyone else — not because white people told them to, but because it’s just a human thing to do — and Dolivo’s article seems to have forgotten that very basic idea.

Naturally, this has sparked some outrage. Dolivo’s original article was posted on Jan. 13 and had 755 mostly angry comments as of our post. And with good reason. Until the fashion industry realizes that people who aren’t white buy and wear fashion — and look good in it — it’s going to keep alienating them. Bravo to everyone who’s pointed out how blunderous and damaging this article is so far. We’ll let you know if or when French Elle releases a statement about this piece — as angry as people have been about it, it can’t be that far off.

Elle did release a statement in the commentars, even not in the article or in a separate part of the article. To sum it up, the chief redactor said that the article was misunderstood and that all of us angry readers had a wrong interpretation of it. I agree that the article wasn’t intended to be offensive but the journalist didn’t do her job and made racist statements.
That kind of racism is the most spread and it’s very hard to discuss it here. People get so uncomfortable as soon as they hear the world “black” and “”white” in a conversation for example. I see it in my everyday life (I’m writing from France).

The problem isn’t people feeling uncomfortable with “black” and “white”, the problem is saying an entire race just began to dress well due to the president and first lady. And then if some do dress what white people consider as “well”, they make it afrocentric because black people can’t help their selves is ridiculous! To categorize an entire race and to sum up black contributions in fashion as FUBU is insulting. That is where the outrage is and if you don’t understand that, then you are just as ignorant as the writer.
Also food for thought: If black people have no sense of fashion, why is there such a high demand to use “ethnic” and “tribal” clothing as inspiration?

It is very sad that people still think this way.  This goes to show that racism will continue to remain in society for a very long time.  Black people has made great contribution to fashion and has had the power to set many fashion trends.  It is very unacceptable to categorize such a large group of people into a corner.  I have seen children as young as toddlers to mature in age people dress in conservative clothing.  Yes the Obama’s have set a bar (in many areas, not just fashion), but on Americans not just black people.

I totally agree on the insults and all the cliches in the article and trust me, I understand very well.
I just wanted to give an indication about the social context here in France regarding the racism issue. Here this racism applies to fashion.

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!!! IF WHITE PEOPLE ARE THAT SPECIAL AS THEY THINK  THEY ARE,WHY CAN’T THEY LIVE FOREVER THEN!!! I’M LOVING MY LIFE. IT’S A WASTE OF TIME TO WORRY ABOUT THIS STUFF HONESTLY.

The only upside I can see is that the racism that’s been there all along is finally showing on the surface. I worked in the cosmetics industry for several years and there was an undercurrent of racism in almost all the decisions that came down from “corporate” of the French companies. They refused for many years to carry cosmetics made for any but the fairest skins, would not have models who weren’t white, and even instructed dark skinned employees to use foundation that would make their skin appear lighter than it was. It was disgusting but denied. Hearing comments spoken or written just confirms that the overtones we were picking up on were indeed signs of an attitude that seems prevalent in fashion, style, and beauty in Europe.

Can you double check the link to the article please? I’d like to check out the original or a translation of the original? thanks.

Africans and therefore African Americans are and have always been an ornate people.
Racism exists, some people are stupid (in all races) and haters are very sad, time is ticking
for all of us in this state of madness.

    Good article.

  • Shenika08

Milay, you are just as fucking ignorant as the dumbass that wrote the damn article. This article is blunt and there isn’t anyway to really misinterpret it. I’m African American with an actual sense of style and if you had one you’d know that there is absolutely NOTHING about what Michelle or Barack wears that is inspiring. NOTHING. Look at the picture used as an example. His suit is nice but Michelle’s outfit is terrible. I work in the Pentagon, filled with African Americans that are well dressed and it’s usually the whites and hispanics that walk around looking like hookers.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You know just don’t give it the attention or waste your time. That article for all intent and purposes was published for the attention, be it negative or positive just to get more sales. Just ignore ignorance, there is too much in this world more important than what some french journalist who doesn’t have a clue wrote, and anyway he probably can’t afford to wear the clothes he writes about!

  • Pewpew

My comments to any French Citizen that has anything derogatory to say about Americans or African Americans need to take American History 101 and French History 101.    My rebuttal to those racist statements are ” If it was not for America helping the French they would be speaking  -German-  if Adolf  Hitler was allowed to continue to rule. Number 2 if it was not for the help of Josephine Baker, The first American woman to receive full French military honors at her funeral. German would be the offical language of the French.  Please do not disrespect Americans or the French with poor comments about Americans or African Americans.

  • Agem

Stop buying things made in France!!!! Stop visiting France!!!!

  • Eve

Shame on Elle for promoting such blatent ignorance!  I thought better of them…..
