Gabby Douglas Doesn’t Care About Her Hair, Why Should You?

Gabby Douglas may be the first American gymnast to win a gold medal in the team and individual all-around competition, but that hasn’t stopped haters from criticizing her hairstyle.

On Sunday, the 16-year-old gold medalist went online only to find out that critics were discussing her hair, rather than her impressive wins. The hairstyle in question is one that Douglas has worn for years — a ponytail only halfway pulled through so the ends hang on her neck, and with snappy hair clips holding back any flyaways. Her response is as great as her floor exercise:

“I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair? I’m like, ‘I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about (my) hair. Nothing is going to change. I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it. I don’t think people should be worried about that. We’re all champions and we’re all winners. I just say that it’s kind of, a stupid and crazy thought to think about my hair.”

Douglas’s response comes shortly after British weightlifter Zoe Smith silenced her own haters. Well, as the saying goes, haters gon’ hate. And besides, Douglas has two gold medals, her own Corn Flakes box, and a killer smile. Pretty sure her critics don’t.

Gabby is an adorable child who has accomplished more in her 16 years that her critics will in their lifetimes.  Her hair is fine and it suits her bubbling personality.  People who say disparaging things about her just do so because they cannot find anything else to criticize.  Those people need to get a life and stop concentrating on the way they look because America has more than one standard of beauty.

How ridiculous. I had no idea people were saying stuff about her hair, but that is nonsense. She looks great, she’s accomplished a TON, and her response is awesome. Get it girl!

She wears what works for her…it keeps it in control through arduous workouts.  Leave her be.

You Go Gabby. I love your marvelous spirit. When people talked about my short hair style a while back, I swore I would wear it until their children got grown. Don’t change a thing about your hair. Enjoy wearing it until your critics are convinced that this is what you want and going to wear.
P.S. I prayed for you last night. I will keep you in my prayer this year and 2016 as well.
     Go Get Your Blessings.

Here’s a question… Has any of them ever become an triple gold metal Olympic winner, as a girl at the age of 16, and who happens to also be an African American from the USA?

    I’ll wait……………

Its doubtful that the comments made by African American women are void of some of their own personal insecurities and strife when regarding the rejection of their own natural looks. The desire to be polished has caused some people to aspire to ‘white standards’ of beauty while this young athlete has rejected all concern for conformity, and instead had embraced her unrefined African hair to focus on what is important. What is equally beguiling is why the question of this athlete’s looks even entered the equation.
