Could Model Gabriel Aubry Really Be Racist?

Things are getting even more intense in the custody battle between Halle Berry and her model ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. The newest claim? That Aubry is “borderline racist.”

That’s what one of the model’s ex-girlfriends told TMZ yesterday — and Page Six published a story this morning that cites allegations that Aubry once used a racial slur against Berry.

The ex-girlfriend quote comes from a woman who claimed to have dated the model from 2003 to 2005. She says he was “very disrespectful to women” during their entire affair and that he “routinely demeaned her with vulgarities” including the N-word.

Meanwhile, unnamed sources told Page Six that because of his use of racial slurs, Berry “has serious concerns for her daughter’s well-being while with him.” Nahla, their daughter, is 3 years old.

Quotes gotten without attribution are difficult to trust, especially when they’re inflammatory and even more especially when they’re conveniently timed to damage a person’s reputation during legal proceedings. But the obvious discrepancy between the claim (that Aubry doesn’t like brown people) and reality (that Aubry was in a relationship and produced a child with a brown person) is what has us intrigued.

Don’t get us wrong: We’re not so naive as to believe that a person who is racist is entirely incapable of having sex with someone outside their race (and we refer you here to the illegitimate children of men like Thomas Jefferson and Strom Thurmond). But those guys kept their bi-racial offspring under the radar for years.

Aubry, on the other hand, entered into a very public and very high-profile relationship with one of the biggest stars of our time, who happens to be bi-racial herself, and had a multi-racial child with her. And now he’s actively pursuing custody of that child, ostensibly so that he can raise her and be around her all the time. For us, there are things about that that simply don’t add up.

We don’t know the guy, so we don’t know for sure whether he actually doesn’t like brown people, or if he’s just chosen to use a few ugly words too often. That said, any use of such words is deplorable, and if its true that he’s spoken to Berry and other women using them, it’s probably a good idea to get Nahla as far away from him as possible. But that’s just our opinion. What do you think?

I think this is Halle’s PR people trying to turn public sentiment against him. It’s revolting and I do hope Halle’s career stalls as a result.

Wait– isn’t Nahla at least tri-racial?

  • noliah

You “think”? Well, I guess that’s it then. Tell the lawyers they can go home now. Elle has spoken.

Actually, the fact is I am a “brown person” who exclusively dates caucasian men (purely a physical attraction thing) and I have discovered that there are men who in spite (and sometimes because) of their racist/stereotypical ideas about dating brown/black women, do so anyway. For some men dating “brown” is an experience/experiment, so perhaps that is what Mr. Aubrey was doing when Halle became pregnant. What was he going to do? Force her to get rid of it? Hardly.

Another perspective is that despite being mildy or pronouncedly racist, he also saw the opportunity to date one of the world’s biggest stars and took it. It would have boosted his career (yes even if he was successful by his own right he could still have wanted more) and made him more recognizable to John Q. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying he is racist. I am merely pointing out it isn’t impossible or even unlikely that he is. It’s sad if he is but ultimately the main concern should be the innocent child and ensuring she is given the opportunity to live a normal life being loved (ideally) by both parents.

Smh. Tri-racial? Do you guys even know what “race” is? The baby is bi-racial. Bi meaning TWO. That baby is a mixture of the black and white races. I agree with Prtynikki. I wouldn’t doubt it if he was racist. He slept with and impregnated a black woman, whoop-ti-do! He doesn’t get a cool card for that. He’s not exclusive from the plethora of white men in America who, if you make them mad enough, throw out racial slurs.

    “Brown People”??

My experiences with white men who date women of color is the color level ….they white men believe because of that relationship the use of the n word would make more connected with the community see I can say the word and still call her up and say hello…we are not living in a perfect world if Aubry feels a tight relationship because of the use of the world it only creates more problem down the line..what if the baby falls down showing no sign of rhythm would he call a racial rant…what if the baby misspelled or mispronounced a word would Aubry that that moment to devalue her mother and the race she looks like…Halle is right to challenge the action of her child’s father when he used the n word…for the mental health of the child I do say challenge Aubrey so that the baby mental health will be a lot stronger…image being called by your white father a word meaning you are ignorant and capable of loving anyone because of your color how confusing would that be for a child of color…it hurts…and as for Elle so sorry your mind is so afraid to against racism it takes a strong person to call out the evil then to give an excuse to hide from racism the evil by throwing the victum under bus…stand it ok just stand and no to evil you my dear will a lot better and for Halle and Baby I wish you both love and support moving on
