Check Out Gap’s Newest Billboard, Starring A Same-Sex Couple

It looks like Gap is already making good on their promise to step up their image. Not content with merely adding more color to their shelves, however, they’re also adding a little diversity to their campaigns with a new ad featuring a very cute gay couple next to the slogan “Be One.”

The retailer follows in the footsteps of JC Penney, who made headlines earlier this week when their May catalog got into the hands of unsavory homophobic group One Million Moms, the same organization that earlier called for the company to fire lesbian spokeswoman Ellen Degeneres, got their granny panties in a bunch when Urban Outfitters pictured two girls kissing in their April catalog, and routinely denounces those who dare feature gay or otherwise “offensive” content.

Whew! Doesn’t bigotry sound exhausting? Pretty soon these (not actually a million) women are going to run out of places to shop, and we’re guessing public nudity is also a big time no-no in their books.

Clearly the LGBTQ community wields more than a fair amount of spending power – that’s what advertising is all about after all – so until conservative groups manage to circumvent that very important fact, get ready to see more campaigns targeting gay consumers.

The billboard in question was spotted by an intrepid tweeter in Los Angeles, but here’s hoping we’ll see it brightening up the side of an NYC building very soon!

Great piece Hilary.  I went to the OMM FB page just after JCP decided on Ellen to do commercials and I can say for a fact that these women gave me a headache with them trying to justify their point of view, but they were countered at every turn by other groups in support of JCP and Ellen.  OMM is up against One million voices.

Please don’t challenge the right-wing nut jobs to take away the spending power of the LGBT community! They’re already trying to do it to women. If they had their way no one would have jobs but churchgoing straight WASP Republican men.

good, a change from the usual heteronormative culture and more into reality represented in ads. wooooo

That’s not just any cute gay couple; that’s Rory O’Malley (Tony nominee for The Book of Mormon and co-founder of Broadway Impact) and his boyfriend Gerold Schroeder. :)

I don’t care if you are gay, straight or otherwise but I do care if you embrace your lifestyle publicly.  It’s none of my business what you do behind closed doors.  That is between you and God and I certainly don’t want to know about it.  That is just too much information for me and others who feel this way.  You can bet your bootie that I don’t stand alone in this thinking.  I know that those stores that are trying to embrace an immoral lifestyle want my business but they have already shown their colors and I will not be purchasing their products ever again.
