German Vogue‘s Naked, Unairbrushed ‘Health Initiative’ Editorial

Condé Nast International and Vogue announced their “Health Initiative” — which pushes for a healthier body image within the pages of all the magazine’s international iterations, as well as within the industry as a whole — earlier this month, promising that the editors would debut the features in their June issues.

German Vogue is making good on their promise with an unairbrushed and naked spread featuring actresses, models, and even editor-in-chief Christiane Arp. Peter Lindbergh photographed actresses like Karina Krawczyk, models like Julia Stegner, Nadja Auermann, and Toni Garrn, and even the glossy’s own head honcho for a black and white, clothing optional shoot. The result is a lot of nipples, rib cages, and wrinkles.

Most of the naked editorials we’ve seen have featured plus-sized models, like this Vogue Italia spread and this controversial Plus Size Model editorial. We dig the plus sized editorials, but we’re also glad to see the other side of things.

Check out some of the pics below (some are NSFW), and see more over at German Vogue. What do you think about the spread?

I think Julia Stegner looks a little like Isabelle Caro in her anti-anorexia campaign. Scary-thin. Sorry :/

I love the idea behind this Editorial. I think this could be the start into a new and better direction.

Ew, that’s what skinny people look like naked?

Najda Auermann looks so much more natural compared to this photo: http://www.myfdb.com/people/1493-nadja-auermann/tear_sheets/8

How is this promoting a healthy lifestyle for women?  Ms Stegner & Ms Thormann look like malnourished concentration camp waifs who’ve not seen food in months.  German Vogue is promoting anorexia with this photo spread. The tragedy of it being the many young women who’ll see it, and think it’s a good thing.

I know it is currently hip to “eww” skinny people, but this is not more acceptable than “ewwing” fat people.  You aren’t helping anyone, even under that guise.  Extremely skinny does not mean anorexia and eating disorders don’t always mean skinny people.  Please come up with more interesting responses to things every time you see a thin model.

I probably don’t weight much more than the models and my doctors say I’m healthy.  I eat more than my husband at times, and yes, I keep it down.  Some men are really skinny.  Why can’t women be?

Calling people on the internet unsightly, deciding they have mental disorders is horrible.  It’s rude.

    Anyway.  Let’s be relevant.

I don’t exactly push for un-Photoshopped photography–try totally un-cleaned up magazines, and see how they sell.  But there is a time and place for these sorts of images.  This photography was lovely in its own way.  I’d rather see more actual fashion than nudes in a fashion magazine, though.  Again, a place and time.
