Was Last Night’s Glee A Thinly-Scarved Tribute To McQueen?
In case you missed it, last night’s episode of Glee was the usual mix of snappy one-liners and catchy musical numbers — plus a teenage identity crisis or two. And while we relished in all the perfectly harmonized theatrics, it was Kurt Hummel’s angry rendition of “Roses Turn” (from the musical Gypsy) that had our arm hairs standing on end.
Now, a bone-a-fied Gleek I’m not, so try to bear with me while I gloss over the plot’s poignant twists and turn my attention on Kurt’s garb, including an Alexander McQueen scarf.
As any avid fan of the show can attest, the openly gay McKinley High schooler is no stranger to designer labels (nor scarves) and has previously worn a delicious camel colored turtleneck scarf by Michael Kors. But this time we couldn’t help but feel like the show’s costume designer was waxing a little more deliberate. From the lace-up combat boots to the Scottish tartan of his pants and the skull scarf — a McQueen calling card — Kurt’s onstage garb seemed to us like a sartorial tribute to the late designer, all set to the emotional tune of an openly gay man lashing out at a father whom he now deeply resents for making him feel like he’s not a “real” man or a “real” son. Maybe it’s just us reading way too much into it, but the eery subtext of Kurt’s performance had our brains wandering.
