PHOTOS: Top 5 Riskiest Red Carpet Looks From Last Night

Here’s the thing. While some celebs play it safe on the red carpet, others understand that an event like the Golden Globes is the perfect opportunity to make a statement. And whether that statement is, “I’m too old and too good an actor to mess about with gowns that are absurdly luxurious” or “Most men’s tuxedos are just plain boring, so I’m going to mix it up” — or even “I’m wearing two different colored shoes and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it” — the five actors in this slideshow made big splashes. And they looked really good doing it. And the best part? Some of them weren’t even nominated!

1. Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton could wear the Sunday edition of The New York Times sewn together with a head of lettuce and she would look chic -- but in this effortless shirt/skirt combo, she looks cool and calm and at home. Also: killer shoes, Tilda.
2. Kevin McHale
Clearly, Arty from Glee doesn't get enough credit. No really. While nearly every other guy on the red carpet threw on a boring basic black or blue suit, Kevin McHale showed up in a polka dotted tux by Dolce & Gabbana . Who does that? Who gets away with that? Kevin McHale, that's who.
3. Michelle Williams
We're not normally fans of overzealous florals, but this Valentino frock wasn't bad -- and Michelle Williams looked comfortable both in the dress and on the red carpet, which is more than we can say for other actresses.
4. Leighton Meester
This look wasn't love at first sight for us, but then we looked closer. This might have been the best put together ensemble of the entire night. The shoes, the bag, the hair and makeup and jewelry -- and the gorgeous Louis Vuitton dress. If ever Miss Meester was worried about being high end, she needn't be any longer.
5. Helena Bonham Carter
The Vivienne Westwood dress! The sunglasses! The two different-colored shoes! Can a red carpet outfit get any more out there than this? No, it cannot. Still, Carter managed to look amazing, and, well, stood out from the crowd. In a good way.
