What Google Ngrams Reveal About Chanel, Couture & Cartier

Are you in the safety of your own home? Do you have hours to devote to a new obsession? Do you like books and words and fashion and words in books about fashion and/or fashion words in books? Because we sure do. And Google Ngram lets us analyze said fashion book words. Which is awesome.

This is how it works: Google has this ridiculous stockpile of books. These books are searchable, and now Google has a cool tool that can chart trends in language and content across centuries. Yeah, it’s amazing.

We spent a good part of our afternoon pitting Chanel against Dior, couture against prêt-à-porter, pants against skirts and… well, just see for yourself below. The results are pretty fascinating, if we do say so ourselves.
