Time Warp: Grace Coddington’s Vintage Vogue Covers

Among other fascinating tidbits learned about Grace Coddington in R.J. Cutler’s The September Issue, we were thrilled to catch a glimpse of the flame-haired editor’s modeling days. After winning a Vogue modeling contest at 17, her career took off, landing her two consecutive British Vogue covers in 1962.

Her career was curtailed after a car accident and the resulting plastic surgery left her eyelid disfigured. But Coddington had found her home in the fashion industry, and instead of moving on, she moved up and became a junior editor at UK Vogue, where she began her illustrious career.

These two UK Vogue covers from 1962, one from August and the other from September, showcase the model turned editor’s natural beauty. Her porcelain skin and, of course, that hair make her beauty original and captivating. It comes as no surprise to us that Coddington would be featured in the fashion bible that is Vogue, but two months in a row? Could it be true?
