Did Gwen Stefani Take Credit For A Dress She Didn’t Design?

At the amfAR Gala in Cannes last week, Gwen Stefani auctioned off the gown she wore to the event. The lacy dress raised more than $125,000 for AIDS research, and we assume part of the reason why the bidding went so high is because Stefani designed it herself. Or did she?

Michael Angel claims the dress (which was also used in a L’Oreal shoot earlier that same day) was his own design. His proof? He’s worked with both Stefani and L’Oreal in the past, and the dress uses lace from his fall 2010 collection (we have a side-by-side below). In the following video, we see Stefani wearing the dress at a fitting with Angel. He is identified as a stylist, and Stefani is shown saying: “In choosing [a dress], we just said, ‘Let’s make one!’” Later in the clip an amfAR presenter introduces the singer, who she says is “wearing a creation of her own by LAMB.”

I really believe this whole thing is an unfortunate misunderstanding and has been blown way out of proportion-Gwen is such an honest, sincere, gracious person, and has so much respect and esteem in the fashion world,it’s incredulous that she would intentionally take false credit for a design.I just hope this controversy doesn’t overshadow Gwen’s charitable efforts in auctioning off the gown to benefit amfAR.

Michael Angel released this statement today-hopefully now these rumors will stop:

This statement is being attributed to Michael Angel. “Earlier this week a former employee from my camp spoke to the press without having full knowledge of the collaboration between Gwen Stefani, L.A.M.B., and me. I strongly want to reassure everyone that the dress was designed by Gwen Stefani for L.A.M.B. to wear and be auctioned off at the amfAR gala. I’m disappointed that the focus has shifted away from what Gwen and I originally intended, which was to create a custom outfit for a great cause. We both were thrilled with the outcome and enjoyed the process. I have nothing but respect for her and look forward to working with her on more projects in the future. I can assure you that this is my only comment on this matter and any other quotations or statements written on my behalf are false.”
