How To Date Someone Who Really, Really Loves Fashion

Here’s the thing — we here at Styleite realize that we have an unusual preoccupation with fashion. In fact, one of the main qualifications to work here is an “obsessive enthusiasm with personal style and the fashion industry.” No really, it says that on our job listings.

We also realize that our obsession can be hard to deal with, especially if you’re not what one might call a fashion person, and especially if you want to be in a relationship with a fashion person. So, in the interest of saving non-fashion people time, heartache and emotional distress, we’ve come up with some tips on how to date a style-obsessed boy or girl.

1) Check yourself, preferably before you wreck yourself. Most human beings have things they’re obsessed with. Fashion just happens to be our thing, but if you try to tell us that our obsession with it is stupid, we’re gonna find a way to turn it around on you. Call fashion unimportant and we’re likely to attack your peculiar affinity for sports or video games — even French literature, which we love, might be subject to our ridicule if you try to belittle our compulsive study of Style.com‘s runway slide shows. If you can spend days on end playing the new Halo, we should be able to watch a 48-hour America’s Next Top Model marathon without you batting an eyelash.

2) Realize that fashion is everywhere. If it weren’t for the fashion industry, you wouldn’t look good right now. You, too, are a consumer of fashion, whether you like it or not. And while you might not be wearing a pair of awesome True Religion jeans or shoes from Salvatore Ferragamo like we are, your look, such as it is, can probably be traced back to a very stylish collection, celebrity or other point of reference. When you say you don’t care about fashion, we will point this out to you.

3) Know when to defer to us. We’re not going to ask you to change who you are to date us — that’s wrong, and who would want to be in a relationship with someone who didn’t accept them? But, we are going to ask you to go shopping with us, and we are going to ask you to come with us to events for which you will more than likely have to up your fashion ante. This won’t happen every night, but it’s gonna happen. Please be ready for it.

4) Get that you don’t have to change who you are — or what you wear — to make us happy. We’re dating you because you make us laugh, because we think you’re cute, and because we’re absurdly compatible. And for those reasons, we mostly couldn’t care less what you wear. If you’re insecure enough to think that your personality or view of our world has to change because you’re dating us, well, why are you dating us?
