Iris Apfel Designed Shoes Because She Couldn’t Find Attractive Ones Herself
Nonagenarian Iris Apfel is dominating the fashion world one sector at a time. After designing jewelry, eyewear, makeup, and handbags, the 91-year-old “geriatric starlet” is now launching a line of shoes with HSN.
The collection will be an add-on to Apfel’s existing Rara Avis collaboration with HSN, and includes seven flats and one mid-heel shoe all priced between $50 and $100. The goods will be available on HSN in February, and she explained to Footwear News in an interview:
“I’ve always done [custom] shoes. I never stopped thinking about [designing] them, but I never thought I’d do commercial shoes, so I’m delirious to be doing it now. I like to make them timeless and ageless. They’re not little girl shoes and they’re not old lady shoes. They’re for all ages depending on your sensibilities. It’s hard to find attractive flats — most are ballet flats or pilgrim shoes. I thought there was a big need for it.”
As for future design plans, Apfel said:
“I’m so busy I haven’t had a chance to think about it. I’m happy I could do everything I’ve done so far, perhaps I’ll go forever.”
