Jason Wu’s Target Line Isn’t His Only Collaboration
We know, we know — everyone and their mother is excited about Jason Wu‘s upcoming collaboration with Target. But the celebrated fashion designer has another partnership coming down the pipeline — one aimed at making your home smell infinitely better than it already does.
At a cocktail part hosted by Nest Fragrances founder Laura Slatkin this week, Wu told us that he’s been working with the candle company on a scent called Orchid Rain, which will start selling for $48 in department stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue this April.
“I’ve been a big fan of Nest fragrances for a long time,” Wu said. “It’s always been one of my little indulgences to burn candles,” adding that soon after he and Slatkin met, they knew they had to work together.
“It made sense because they’re sold at the best department stores,” he explained, “So it seemed to go hand-in-hand with what I do.”
Slatkin told us that Wu had his heart set on creating a pear scent. “One of our fragrances is Wasabi Pear, and he really loved it,” she said. “So he loved the essence of pear, but he wanted it to be very sophisticated, and he wanted to add floral.” The end result of months of work was a fragrance that combines pear with cattelaya orchid, birchwood, leather and peppercorn. Slatkin had the candles burning all over her home, and if the combination of ingredients that went into the candle sounds peculiar, we can assure you that the scent itself is intoxicating.
And that’s why Wu and Slatkin are already planning another candle — Orchid Rain is just “one of a series,” Slatkin said. For his part, Wu is excited that this will open the doors for more products that aren’t just great clothes and accessories.
“I think the home market is something I’m really interested in. Also the beauty market. I think Nest sort of crosses the line between both markets,” he said. “So it seems to be the perfect introduction.”
But just because he’ll have two collaborations on shelves in a few short months (his Target line goes on sale Feb. 5) doesn’t mean Wu is ready to hop into bed with any company that comes calling.
“It has to be organic and inspired,” Wu said of collaborations. “I’m a big fan of quality over quantity. So right now I’m intent on keeping collaborations limited, but high quality.”
And as long as he’s intent on quality, we’ll be intent on buying his wares.
