WATCH: Is This JC Penney Commercial The Most Sexist Ad Ever?

We’re starting to wonder if J.C. Penney is actively courting bad press. Hot on the heels of their “I’m Too Pretty To Do Homework” shirt debacle, the mass market retailer launched a new campaign that uses Phoebe Cates‘ iconic red bathing suit scene from Fast Times At Ridgemont High to sell men’s dress shirts. Wait, what?

The idea behind the ad, according to the spokesperson who introduces it, is that men are incapable of focusing on anything that doesn’t come part and parcel with a half-naked teenage girl.

We’re not sure who should be more insulted: men or women.

jc penny is smoking something. like, everything, and a lot of it.

  • bozekmm

If this were aired on Spike or during a football game I could see where someone would think it was a good idea. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make it okay. This is definitely sexist and offensive. I’m disappointed that something like this would air today.

  • Maliagriggs

    I’m pretty offended.

  • Bikerk

Just plain insulting to ANYONE with two wits.

more naked teenage girls = more sales

  • Akiss50

The female part of this ad was taken from a movie from over 20 years ago.  She is a grown woman now with kids of her own.  So, I am not offended by this ad.  Anyway, if you don’t like what you see don’t look and don’t buy the products.  That will send a message to the advertising and the company.

Folks the ad is hilarious, stop you’re pious whining!

  • Kid A

If we’re getting rid of this add, then let’s kill those dumb Zoosk commercials where men are either depicted as completely witless or just there as shirtless window dressing.

First they let a student redesign their logo, now this. They need to fire their creative people.

GROW UP!  Its a girl in a bathing suit!  WTF!!!!   If your offended you need to move to Iran!

  • Lindley_mike

Ahhh, Phoebe Cates.  Good to have you back, and cudos to JC Penny’s for upping their game.  BTW, it’s not just about a hot girl in a bikini, rather, it’s intended audience is 35+ men who remember the iconic movie and will buy Van Huesen.  But it’s also about Phoebe.
