Jean Paul Gaultier Dishes On Carla Bruni, Gaga, And Cone Bras
Jean Paul Gaultier does what he wants. He puts Beth Ditto in his runway shows and makes mechanical corsets. His biggest design regret is not designing the condom! And his couture shows are divine. So yes, we think he’s really great.
The irreverent designer was recently interviewed by the Daily Telegraph, and now our love for him is even more justified. Here are 5 reasons why JPG’s a Styleite fave:
1. He started designing cone bras when he was 7… for his teddy bear.
“The first coned-shaped bra I made was for that bear. The poor thing went through a lot. When the Duchess of Kent got married and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, he had to wear wedding dresses. But he’s a catastrophe now. You should see him: he needs silicone and Botox — the whole lot.”
2. He thinks a sense of humor is the most necessary style accessory.
“I’ve always felt more at home in the UK than in France. There is a particular humour in Britain that you don’t find elsewhere, and one can see that in the way you dress. You’re so good at making fun of yourself here, whereas in France people feel that they always have to be serious, tasteful, and adhere to ‘the code’. People think that everyone wears black in France; in fact they all wear grey.”
3. He likes Carla Bruni.
“She’s been so clever because she’s playing the role of the First Lady and she’s doing it well. Carla would have been assassinated if she’d dressed the way she normally likes to dress. Then when she’s promoting her albums, she dresses as a singer again.”
4. He acknowledges his fully ridiculous (and amazing) music career.
“I would be a different person today if I hadn’t met Francis. I would still have been in fashion, of course, but perhaps, I would not have made a record or done Eurotrash.”
5. He tells it like it is: Gaga is great, but a copycat.
“I think she’s talented and very inpolitically incorrect, which I love. But I also think that she read up on Madonna’s life and learnt it like the Bible.”
