Jean-Paul Guerlain Uses The N-Word On French Television

Jean-Paul Guerlain (yes, that Guerlain) is taking some serious heat for using an ugly racial slur not just once but twice during a television interview. The perfumer, who no longer works for the company that bears his name in an official capacity, was discussing the making of his perfume Samsara when he let loose a choice word equivalent to the American N-word. If it weren’t for that, the story would have been quite romantic — Mr. Guerlain created Samsara for a woman.

“One day I told her — and I still called her Madame — ‘What would seduce you if one was to make a perfume for you?’ and she told me, ‘I love jasmine, rose and sandalwood,’” Mr. Guerlain recalled.

“And for once I started working like a [racial epithet]. I don’t know if [racial epithet] ever worked that hard,” he said.

Guerlain has apologized, saying that he ‘vividly’ regrets his unfortunate choice of words, but that pronouncement hasn’t been enough stall groups like SOS-Racisme, a French anti-racism group that plans to file a formal legal complaint against Mr. Guerlain. Even France’s finance minister Christine Laguarde has spoken out against Mr. Guerlain, noting that while he is an older man, he’s words were “truly pathetic.”

Really, there’s nothing more that we can say about the remarks — they’re pretty insensitive and categorically incorrect, considering that the people Mr. Guerlain referred to were worked so hard that many died from exhaustion, to say nothing of the multitudes who died from neglect, preventable diseases or simple unfeeling slaughter.

But don’t feel bad about entering our Guerlain Giveaway — Mr. Guerlain has only been working with the company as a consulting “nose” for perfumes since 2002.

[Note: We do not use the title 'Mr.' to show Jean-Paul Guerlain any sympathy or respect, but rather to distinguish him from the company that bears his name.]

It sounds to me likethe French Finance minister is guilty of age bias. Saying something like “while he is an older man…” means that he should be treated differently than everyone else. This is bigotry. It’s like saying “even though he is a nigger,…” which you would never tolerate. And it is also interesting that in the article you state flat-out that you do not respect this man. It’s unusual to be so bold, but may I ask: do you not respect him also because he is old, or is it simply because he is white?

Wow. Talk about making an excuse for bad behavior. This guy was WRONG…PERIOD. His age has nothing to do with it. What is implied is that just because he is an older man(where in his time this maybe was acceptable) he should know better. And before you or anyone else comes with the “it’s okay if Black people call White people racist names”,NO IT IS NOT! It’s not about this foolish “PC” stuff(which IMHO is just an excuse for bad behavior),it’s about respecting one another as HUMAN BEINGS. I would never say anything like that about a White, asian, latino, indian, etc person. It’s rude and disrespectful. And again for the “self-crucifixion set”(those people who will complain if he is fired or quits or whatever,I don’t know who this man is,not into “fashion” in the least) if he is truly sorry let him continue with whatever it is that he does. There so no one can say there’s no forgiveness!

Didn’t anybody’s Mom teach them, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.”

    I’ve been invincible ever since.

Your an asshole gersucknig. Sounds to me like you have dropped a few racial slurs in your day and then tried that reverse racism bullshit.

I think what the prime minister was trying to say by “the older man” comment was that he is older and language like that may have been more accepted for him and others like him to use when he was younger because that was just what they did back then… Either way now its not so accepted or appropriate

  • White nigger

Your are absolutely right, gersucknig, salute!!!
