Jennifer Lawrence Tells Elle: ‘In Hollywood, I’m Obese’

There are many reasons we love Jennifer Lawrence — she plays kickass Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games, she’s stunning, and she’s real. We mean real real, as in she’s not afraid to speak her mind. Case in point: her B.S.-free Elle cover story.

Lawrence wears Balenciaga on the cover and a handful of fancy designer clothes inside the December issue, but what’s most interesting is the mag’s interview with the 22-year-old star. She shot to fame with her role in the Hunger Games, but with that fame also came criticism, most of which focused on her weight. Katniss is supposed to be a poor and starving hunter, and critics have said that Lawrence was too “big” or “shapely” to play such a character.

Of course, Lawrence brushed the dirt off her shoulders, and people like Stanley Tucci (who’s also in the film) told critics to bug off. The subject was brought up once again in Elle, and unlike stars such as Anne Hathaway, who went through crazy gym sessions and diets for The Dark Knight Rises and Les Misérables, Lawrence explains that she would never slim down for a role:

“I eat like a caveman, I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors. In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress, I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach…I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner. That’s something I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong — not thin and underfed.”

And that’s why you rule, JLaw.

Good for you Jennifer; you’re not fat and you know it, but you’re not starving either. Thank God Hollywood hasn’t gotten to you yet. (Everyone seems to overlook your incredible performance in Winter’s Bone.) That’s the name of the game I guess. Yea! for you.

It’s so refreshing to see that there is finally someone who will stand up for themselves and not fall into the deathly grasps of Hollywood’s obsession to be thin. As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder for over 9 years, it brings a smile and great happiness to me that Jenifer is someone I can look up to. I recently just entered treatment in San Diego for 2 months in the beginning of this year, and one of the questions the therapist asked was what celebrity we could look up to. I am proud to say that I am def. now able to pick Jenifer. The average person isn’t a size 0 or twig thin. It’s sad how weight obsessive society is. I’d rather have curves and be happy than so thin I look like I’m dying. I would never want my 6 yr old neice to watch a movie and think that she had to starve herself because she wanted to look like a certain character. Props to Jenifer for thinking of how her actions affect other people. You GO GIRL!!!! You look amazing, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I’ve been in recovery from my eating disorder for over 7 months and I can honestly say Jenifer is such an inspiration to me. It’s all about how a person presents themselves, no matter what their size.
