Tonchi’s W Loses First Staffer, Creative Director Jody Quon
Stefano Tonchi‘s recently revamped W magazine has just dropped its third issue, and already one newly hired staffer is departing. Jody Quon, who was only hired as W’s creative director in April, has resigned under some very interesting circumstances.
Quon came to W from a six year tenure as photo director at New York Magazine, in a hire many speculated didn’t come cheap for Tonchi. While Quon’s future home is yet to be determined, what’s more mysterious is why she left in the first place. In an interview with WWD, Tonchi remained charmingly if frustratingly cryptic, but the split certainly doesn’t sound good.
Tonchi called Quon’s departure “very, very sad,” though he suspected something was up when he got back from Fashion Month.
“I really came back 10 days ago and there was a lot of tension in the office, much more than before,” he said.
When asked to elaborate, he said, “I was away and when I came back there was a certain tension. That is all.”
WWD notes that insiders have cited a clash between Quon and other W staffers as the root of the problem, though Tonchi couldn’t say whether it stemmed from personality or cultural differences. “Probably both,” he conceded.
Tonchi spoke highly of Quon and her work at W, but said she couldn’t be swayed. “Her feelings were very strong. She had all the right to make her own decision, it’s her life and she has to live it.”
While we’re still waiting to hear the real deal, one thing is for sure: it sounds like there’s a nasty game of office politics going on over at W.
