Joey & Jeremiah Dish On Dressing Like Homeless Lesbians, RZ’s Baby
Joey Maalouf and Jeremiah Brent have spent much of the current season of “The Rachel Zoe Project” getting acclimated to their new roles as stylists and giving each other the side-eye. Last week, they sat down for a phone interview with Styleite and dished on the current season, each other, and their personal style.
On their relationship:
Joey: I trust Mandana [Dayani's} judgment more than anyone's, and I obviously wanted to like Jeremiah, but of course I took a couple steps back to kind of figure him out and see what he was really doing working for Rachel [Zoe]. I tend to test people without realizing it.
Jeremiah: I was very aware of what I was getting into. The people around [Rachel] are very protective, and rightfully so — I think she’s been through a lot. [My relationship with Joey] is very much like a sibling…he gives me a hard time, but at the end of the day he has a good heart. I’m the new guy; everybody’s gotta give the new guy shit.
Joey: To really answer your question — I treat him the same now.
On their personal style:
Joey: I have this black Gucci cashmere v-neck sweater, and I’ve had it for about eight years, and I cannot get rid of it.
Jeremiah: I have this vintage Ralph Lauren denim shirt that I think I wear, like, every other day on the show.
Joey: I buy the most basic things and I really love clean, just rolled out of bed, I don’t really care what I’m wearing menswear. I think that everything I own kind of has that vibe.
Jeremiah: My mom came into town once, and I was showing her some clothes that I bought and she looked at me and said “I just don’t understand why you spend so much money to look like a homeless lesbian.”
Joe: I think we both dress differently, but we have the same aesthetic. We both love to look like we don’t care, even if we spent five hours trying to pick out an outfit.
Joey: The exciting part about it was having amazing designers like Tom Ford design couture dresses; Armani Privé changed [Anne Hathaway's] dress color from a wine-red to this amazing electric purple-y blue. You gasped every time [Anne] walked out. I think every single dress was so amazing.
On their favorite Oscar look:
Joey: My favorite, because I’m such a classic girl, was the Oscar de la Renta — I love the gold fringe, I love a shimy-shimmy-shimmy dress. If I could have worn one, I would have worn that one.
Jeremiah: I loved the Armani Privé, and Tom Ford can do no wrong in my eyes.
On their dream client:
Jeremiah: I have the hugest crush on Anne Hathaway. She’s so fantastic and down to earth and intelligent. I think Blake Lively is beautiful, but she dresses pretty amazing already.
On Kate Middleton:
Joey: Oh my gosh, she would be so amazed if I got my hands on her. I’m the only person that would say something bad about her, but I think her makeup makes her look a little old. I think she would look fresh and young and dewy, and as if she just woke up looking like that. Oh my god, that’s the best question ever; I’d just like to touch her.
On the most surprising aspect of their new jobs:
Joey: It was difficult because I’m not a stylist, and I never thought in a million years I would want to become one. Thinking like a stylist is very different for me because hair and makeup comes naturally but with styling you have to think of clamps and clips and pins, and [you have to think] are there creases in the dress, is the client happy, is the photographer happy, is the producer happy, is the assistant happy. It’s a lot.
Jeremiah: The whole experience has been a huge trip for me. I want to get the job done correctly and done as quickly as possible, and I think that’s the key to success with Rachel. Rachel has always been really great, and given me free rein creatively and always trusted my aesthetic.
Joey: I think the best trait to have working with Rachel is confidence. She likes people with an opinion.
On Rachel and Rodger’s new baby:
Joey: [Skylar] brought a lot of love and a lot of energy, and I think he brought out a different side of Rachel. Even when she was pregnant with him she became this amazing, calm, strong, sexy and confident woman, and I think that Skylar brought a lot of patience out of her. It’s really fun to have him on set…it jut makes it a bigger family affair.
Jeremiah: She was the best pregnant woman I’ve ever seen: she was happy all the time, and she still stresses but her ability to relinquish control, from what I’ve heard, is a lot different than what it was pre-pregnancy.
Joey: I pay less attention to her and I go straight for [Skylar]. It’s all about the baby.
“The Rachel Zoe Project” airs on Bravo Tuesdays at 9pm/8pm Central.
