Julianne Moore Details Her Sarah Palin Transformation

We admit, we’ve caught ourselves doing a double take of Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin in the ads for the upcoming HBO movie Game Change. Who would have thought the elegant red-headed siren would make such an accurate doppelganger of Alaska’s former governor? And just as Palin herself stole the show as John McCain’s running mate inthe 2008 presidential election, so too is Moore’s portrayal of Palin causing the most buzz about Game Change.

People delved into the mechanics behind Moore’s transformation, citing everything from an immaculately tailored wardrobe (despite some of Palin’s real life snafus) to hours in the tanning booth as steps toward becoming Sarah. “She’s very tanned,” Moore said of Palin to People, “and I’ve never been tan in my life. So just changing my skin to that color took a lot. I don’t tan, I just get freckly, so we had to cover up my freckles, then darken my skin, and there was contouring. We have a different architecture to our faces.”

Other finely tuned details included Moore wearing contact lenses with enlarged irises to make her eyes appear bigger, fake nails (oh Alaska), and of course, the glasses. “The glasses were exactly the same ones [Palin] wears,” Moore said. “But they were scaled down, because my face is a little bit smaller.”

Once the metamorphosis was completed, a process that took over 2 hours each morning, not even Moore’s husband Bart Freundlich felt totally comfortable with his wife. “We took some pictures with the kids, and it’s like us with Sarah Palin,” Freundlich said. “We weren’t freaking out, because we’ve all been on so many sets with her. But it was kind of eerie, uncanny.” Moore added that it took wiping her makeup off at the end of the day to really feel like herself again.

We’re guessing both fans and critics of Palin will be tuning in when Game Change debuts this Saturday, March 10 on HBO, and we’ll be right along with them. And by the way, where’s all the love for Ed Harris?

I fear what she represents: the desire of a huge segment of our population who were not just willing, but EAGER to put someone so manifestly lacking in critical thinking skills within a septuagenarian’s heartbeat of control of our nuclear arsenal.
