Justin Bieber Can’t Sell Magazines — Tween, Teen, Or Otherwise

Oh, man. Justin Bieber may be able to sell out arenas in milliseconds and push perfume like nobody’s business, but he’s lacking in the magazine department. In fact, his February Vanity Fair cover might be the mag’s worst-selling issue in 12 years (or, you know, since Biebs was 5).

Let’s do some math. The pop star’s cover sold 246,000 covers, and the magazine sells an average of 342,000 issues each month. This means Bieber’s cover sold about a third less than the monthly average. Ouch. Adding insult to injury, Bieber’s October Teen Vogue issue sold 12% below the magazine’s average, and an April People cover starring the 17-year-old sold 25% below the weekly’s average.

A Vanity Fair spokeswoman quipped to Women’s Wear Daily, “Who knew 12-year-olds didn’t buy magazines?” Now that is an interesting thing to think about. First of all, we don’t know many tweens who read VF (or many VF-loving adults who want to read about Bieber). But when we were 12, we were all about glossies like Seventeen. That said, a lot of teen magazines have since folded. Remember YM? Or Teen? Or CosmoGirl? Or Teen People? Or Elle Girl?

Sure, a whole lot of magazines have shuttered in the past decade, but a remarkable number of teen and tween-focused titles have bit the dust. Maybe that should have been a sign that 12-year-olds apparently don’t buy magazines? More importantly, where are these 12-year-olds getting their fold-out Bieber posters to plaster all over their walls?! (No seriously, where?)

Whatever, Biebs, we’ll step to the beat of your heart:

It is the same thing with GaGa, Kirsten Stewart or other so common Hollywood stars who actually have no sense or the glamour that I like. I mena, I’m subscribed to Vogue, Harper’s and others… but when they put themselves in that position of going with the flow and following such a MASS trend, is just bit tasteless. Where do you find real inspiration there?
Is actually Stewart a fashion muse, Is really GaGa muse outside Mugler??? I think this is when I must support GRACE CODDINGTON, and show a little of disgust by oh!-those-so-Hollywood stars…

Pop celebrities like Justin(teen idols) should stick to the covers of teen magazines.  Teens, tweens and kids who admire him can’t afford the prices of magazines like VF and with the economy today the moms sure won’t be forking over those bucks for just Justin.  When I was into pop stars we only had teen magazines that would feature these kids and they would never be on the cover of VF or Vogue unless they were models like Twiggy.

And even with the old teen magazines  the covers and who was going to be made a star was not up to the public the publicists would push certain kids over others because they had the cute factor.

I concur with icequeen. Tiger Beat, 16 magazine, and Seventeen only somewhat, were the most popular teen magazines for teens when I was into pop stars also. For me, seeing Fabian on one of the covers, would have me breaking my piggy bank open pretty darn fast!

Very few kids are interested in buying Teen Vogue or Vanity Fair, especially Vanity Fair??  Besides being too expensive for a kids magazine, VF has the Beib looking too girlish.

If you compare VF mag to some of the latest Tiger Beat and Bop mags, VF loses big time in showing the kid as he really is..
Making Beiber look girlish was a stupid idea. It’s not what the millions of tween girls, who adore his every move, his every word, & the ground he walks on, want to see.
