Everything You Need To Know About Kanye’s Cannes Film Premiere
Last night Kanye West premiered his short film Cruel Summer at Cannes. It was, as expected, a whole to-do.
The film stars Kid Cudi and Razane Jammal and was inspired by “the Romeo & Juliet-esque classic Middle Eastern tale Anter and Abla“, proving earlier speculation was pretty much spot-on. Aziz Ansari and West have bit parts in Cruel Summer, in which a car thief (Cudi) falls in love with a blind woman (Jammal) whose father will only let them marry if the thief can cure his daughter’s blindness.
It was filmed in Qatar, and screened in a pyramid structure built on an abandoned parking lot in Cannes. According to WWD:
Going with the pyramid theme, the film played out across seven screens positioned above below and around the audience, with different scenes and perspectives projected simultaneously to enhance the sensory experience. As the film’s hero tumbled through the desert in one scene, for instance, a ground-level screen showed magnified moving grains of sand. The film, which was produced by West’s creative company, DONDA, in collaboration with the Doha Film Institute, will travel with its pyramid structure to different locations around the world.
Yeezy’s fashion is involved, as per GQ‘s Logan Hill, who tweeted some other interesting tidbits from last night’s premiere:
“It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we’re always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies,” West said. “I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together. I’m not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies. You know, [Quentin] Tarantino doing a movie like this or a horror movie like this, animation, 3-D … in this form that surrounds you. People want to go back and see it more and more because they missed something to their left or to their right, and it feels more like the experience of life.”
And just in case you had any doubt, Kanye brought Kim Kardashian (outfitted in Balmain) as his date, and Jay-Z was there to support his pal. Here are some pics:
