Kanye West Designed The Shoes For Another Designer’s Collection
Well, it’s the same designer that he worked with for Fall 2012: Dion Lee, the promising young Australian with a fondness for cutouts who made waves in Sydney recently when he announced that he would be showing in London in September. His Resort 2013 collection, however, was shown last week in New York and the footwear, too, is all West. Kanye West, that is.
Lee’s pieces have been popping up on the red carpet since his debut collection in 2008. Recently, Charlize Theron wore one of Lee’s cutout body-hugging designs to the CinemaCon awards, while Rooney Mara wore a similarly revealing leather number to the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo premiere in Rome. That being said, the designer made headlines last season not only for his gauzy sheaths and innovative cuts but for his choice of Kanye as a shoe collaborator and the surprisingly appealing footwear that came out of the collection.
The shoes West designed for Resort look like a slightly modified version of last season’s pumps, keeping the basic shape, heel height, and toe cleavage, but swapping the heavy upper strap and hardware for a skinny gray strap-and-tie detailing. The change brings the shoe into the warmer months and the final result is — dare we say it? — subtle. Understated, even, were it not for the 5-inch heel. Suffice it to say these are a far cry from the beaded, pearl-laden $5,883 party sandal he designed with Giuseppe Zanotti for his runway show. We approve
