TIME WARP: Karl Lagerfeld Stars In VH1 Fashion Awards Clip

Remember the VH1 Fashion Awards? They were such a thing back in the day! They were even the inspiration for Zoolander! The last time they were held was in 2002, but the show’s archives are full of awesome fashion-related ephemera. Like Fat Karl.

Before Karl Lagerfeld was the svelte Kaiser we all know and love (but after he was a 21-year-old with nary a gray hair), he had a bit of a weight problem. And it was during his heavier years that he filmed a bit part for David Cross‘s awesome 1997 VH1 Fashion Awards sketch. Cross plays perfumer Andre Galletois, a fictitious “nose” who goes on smell safaris and helps designers (like Karl!) create their special scents.
