Karl Drops Everything, Whips Up Custom Chanel For Cate Blanchett
When it comes to designer/celebrity partnerships, at one end of the Spectrum of Weird and Unexpected are John Galliano and cross-dressing Stephen Fry. At the other are Karl Lagerfeld and Cate Blanchett. It even rolls off the tongue like fine Como silk.
For the Aussie actress’ titular role in the upcoming film Blue Jasmine, in which Cate plays a Xanaxed-up Upper East Sider in breakdown mode, Karl knocked out two custom Chanel jackets in as many days for the actress at the request of costumer Suzy Benzinger. “For Cate, I’d do anything” was his justification for whipping up the bouclé duds right in the middle of the fashion shows. And that was before he witnessed her in pinnacle red carpet domination mode at the film’s New York premiere.
The Chanel jackets we’ll be seeing in Blue Jasmine are a little more refined than Cate’s maternity-chic Balenciaga ensemble. In tune with director Woody Allen’s timeless mentality, the wining jacket was a classic white bouclé style with navy trim.
