Karl Lagerfeld Is Designing An Island In Dubai
If it wasn’t enough that Karl Lagerfeld was a revolutionary fashion designer, couturier, photographer, filmmaker and model, now he’s designing a standalone island hotel in the United Arab Emirates.
Yes, you read that correctly. He’s not just going to decorate the buildings that will be on this island, or dressing the people who will work on it. The Kaiser is terraforming. And then he’s going to decorate buildings and dress people.
Design Scene reports that Lagerfeld has teamed up with Miami-based architecture firm Oppenheimer and the Kor Hotel group to design a 1.2 million square foot island off the coast of Dubai, which is the world capital of building an island and then putting something absurdly expensive on top of it.
Lagerfeld’s island will be called Isla Moda, which speakers of Spanish and most romance languages will recognize as meaning Fashion Island. (Yes, we agree it sounds better in Spanish, too). Upon this island of fashion, Oppenheimer will construct 150 residential units (we think that means apartments) and three luxury hotels. The aesthetic is inspired by the floating palaces of India, but it looks to us more like an assemblage of modern technology and tons and tons of money. And while the artist renderings of the island, below, are stunning, what we can’t wait for are the red carpet pictures from when this island gets party ready in 2014.
