Karl Lagerfeld Slams John Galliano: ‘I’m Furious!’

Another of fashion’s heavy hitters has weighed in on the John Galliano scandal, and he’s not pleased. Yes, Karl Lagerfeld is pissed.

WWD quotes the designer as saying:

I’m furious, if you want to know. I’m furious that it could happen, because the question is no longer even whether he really said it. The image has gone around the world. It’s a horrible image for fashion, because they think that every designer and everything in fashion is like this. This is what makes me crazy in that story.

The thing is, we are a business world where, especially today, with the Internet, one has to be more careful than ever, especially if you are a publicly known person. You cannot go in the street and be drunk — there are things you cannot do. I’m furious with him because of the harm he did to LVMH and [chairman and ceo] Bernard Arnault, who is a friend, and who supported him more than he supported any other designer in his group, because Dior is his favorite label. It’s as if he had his child hurt.

While it’s one of the strongest responses we’ve seen so far, it’s worth noting that Lagerfeld’s complaint relates to tangential aspects of the situation. First of all, he’s mad that people will now associate the entire fashion industry with anti-Semitism. (This is just simply not going to be the case, Karl!) Secondly, he seems upset that Galliano allowed himself to get to drunk and be videotaped. (Lagerfeld says nothing about what Galliano said, only that he should have been more careful about it entering the public domain.) Lastly, he’s angry that Galliano is doing damage to Dior and LVMH. (It’s all about the Benjamins?)

The outrage is that Karl Lagerfeld did not condemn Galliano’s remark’s. Maybe having been born in the Hitler’s heyday in Germany, he perhaps feels the same? If not, he would be smart to distance himself from the hateful rhetoric of his fashion colleague. Yes.. in the age of the internet, images and words can document the ugly truth of an ugly person that no amount of beautiful fabric, lace, ruffles and make-up cannot disguise.

How arrogant of Lagerfeld to think that because Gallino opens his mouth that the entire world of fashion is now brushed with an anti-semitic reputation. I am sure their are those who feel that Gallino does not define nor speak for the entire fashion world.

Well, it IS all about the money and reputation! If Galliano hates Jews and loves Hitler, that’s fine with me. Those are his personal views…who am I to judge…so whatever…so long as he doesn’t go killing someone over them. What’s stupid is that he actually SAID it publicly to people. He should keep those thoughts to himself.

I was waiting on what Karl views are about this subject. but he’s right. in a more simpler case, Galliano has fucked its up for the fashion world and it being taken seriously. & for the young children, wishing, hoping, working, & schooling to be the next couturier, it kinda makes you feel bad because Galliano was a big inspiration for me as a couturier, & i have friends are jews. So would you hate me because of my friends? But now that is over. Let us fashion people try to pick up the pieces and carry on.
