It’s Official! Karl Lagerfeld Is A Certified Kajillionaire

It’s no surprise that Karl Lagerfeld is a wealthy dude, but we may have underestimated the Kaiser’s wealth just a bit. He’s set to make $108 million..in just one year…from his men’s collection alone.

We rarely get the opportunity to peek into a designer’s finances, but with Lagerfeld (the men’s collection in question) extending its partnership with its licensing company, the staggering sales projections were released to the public. This wee bit of change is just a drop in the bucket. Lagerfeld also gets paychecks from Chanel, Fendi, and his myriad collaborations with the likes of Macy’s, that glassware company, that wine company, and the like (and we know how much money those can net).

The next year should prove to be an even bigger one for the desiger, whose masstige line is set to drop on Net-A-Porter in February and whose new women’s line Karl Lagerfeld Paris will roll out to stores in the fall. And this is why he can afford five townhouses on the same tony Paris street and a white gold iPad.

If that is how much there is projected to be in sales, that does not mean this is how much profit there will be from it. These are two very different things.
A business can generate revenue, without making a profit at all.
Now, it’s Karl, so there’s probably some profit, I just doubt it’s $100 million from a men’s line.

Unfortunately, I can’t read the full article linked unless I subscribe to WWD.

OK, here’s me stating this better:
I have no doubt that Karl Lagerfeld is a very wealthy man.
But clearly someone doesn’t understand something here.
See, to characterize projected sales of $108 million as the amount someone is “set to make” off a clothing line is utter facepalm territory. Even the company itself will not “make” 108 mil. What they will “make” is the profit- what’s left after you have advertising, materials cost, labor costs, and all that jazz.
So, I don’t know if he’ll “make” 5 million, 10, 25, what, but if the entire total of sales is $108 million, there’s no way that’s what he’s getting.

there are photographers who live on the type of bookings he does as a side job. and if tom ford socked away more money than the landed gentry with his gucci gig, one can only imagine what chanel money must look like for uncle karl.
