Karl Lagerfeld Created An Anime-Inspired Holiday Line For Shu Uemura
Karl Lagerfeld is collaborating with Japanese makeup brand Shu Uemura on a cartoon-y holiday collection set to hit shelves this October.
Karl has been using Shu Uemura’s eyeshadows to color his sketches for decades. “It’s better than pastel; nobody has colors like that,” the designer told WWD. Because he’s always using their hues, Karl created a character for the brand called Mon Shu (a play on the phrase “mon chou”, which means “my dear” in French) — a girl with a black bob and red eyes, dressed much like Lagerfeld himself in a high-collared white shirt and black tie — whose likeness is all over the collection. Shu Uemera General Manager Vincent Nida said of the collaboration:
“Blending the borderless creativity of Karl Lagerfeld to the makeup expertise of Shu Uemura, we believe this collaboration will bring fun, excitement and modernity to the brand.”
The line includes 17 pieces: two eye-and-cheek palettes, three nail shades, four lip colors, makeup remover, purple liquid eyeliner, base mousse, two pairs of false lashes, and various tools. Karl even has his own version of the brand’s iconic eyelash curler, with red silicon replacing black. Red is a recurring theme in the collection, and appears in the eye palettes. Shu Uemura Expert Makeup Artist Ludovic Engrand said:
“Red is a symbolic color for Karl Lagerfeld, because he always dreamed of a red eye shadow to make his sketches. So they created it in this palette for him.”
The collection will be available first in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, after will it will be rolled out to another 15 countries. Prices range from $27 for a bottle of nail polish to $368 for the makeup box. Check out the line in the gallery below, and be sure to watch the collection’s adorable animated short, “Mon Shu Girl Birth Story”. Enjoy!
