Karl Lagerfeld: ‘My Head Is Like A Crystal Ball’
Karl Lagerfeld is taking advantage of the last week of the year to crack us up one final time with his notable quotables. In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Radio 4‘s Today this morning, the Kaiser chats with reporter Lesley Curwen about designing luxury goods (“We create a product that nobody needs but people want”), the possibility of selling his wares on Amazon (“Why not? If it’s well done, look at Net-a-Porter!”), never watching television or going online (“I’m like a building with a TV antenna”), and of course, Choupette (“Her fur is so beautiful that she doesn’t want to ruin it [with] necklaces or jewelry”). The interview is classic Karl, but one thing is for sure: he’ll never stop doing his thang.
When Curwen asks him if he’d ever thought about slowing down, he rants:
“No, why should I? I think I’m very lucky that I have all those projects, the possibility to do things in such great condition. Why should I slow down? What a bore! That is commonplace to think that people have to slow down and [not] burn out. You know, I have a very healthy life. I don’t smoke, I don’t eat too much, I don’t drink, I never take drugs. So, my head is like a crystal ball and I have no need of slowing down. I take time for myself, and I like to read and things like that, but I’m very well-organized and I have great people to work with in all my businesses. You know some people have worked with me for 30 years and never had another job, so I mustn’t be that horrible.”
Listen to the whole interview over here, and raise your glasses to another year of Karlisms!
